Re: A few pictures from the past season...
Glad you liked the pictures. Good call on the Spanish origins of the shotgun. It is an Armas Garbi 20ga. It is one of their lower model guns. I bought it used in almost new condition with the stock being on of the drawing factors. It’s nice and upsetting when I put a mark on it, but I bought it to b...

Re: A few pictures from the past season...
Those are sharp tails in northern Montana. Over the course of the season we hunted blue grouse, ruffed grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, California quail, mountain quail, scaled quail, chukars, huns, pheasants, and assorted waterfowl in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California, and New Mexico.

Re: A few northeast Oregon hunts
Yeah, we have a facebook page. Look up Minam Store to find us. We also have our old website called Minam raft rentals. They'll both have some company info, but we don't have anything up about hunt trips yet. Haha, truth is my shotgun is worth just about as much as all of the rest of my possessions p...

Re: A few northeast Oregon hunts
The SxS is an Armas Garbi model 100 20 gauge. In the picture I'm paddling an 18' Maravia raft. 112 - Copy.JPG As far as running hunt trips, we're currently working on building that in our program. Last year we did not do any guided hunts, but one way we have done it, is run supported trips where cli...

Re: A few northeast Oregon hunts
When we went on those September trips we always saw lots of rattlesnakes, to the point that many of the guided float groups would camp on the river islands to avoid snakes . Never had any trouble with them but my grandkids are New Englanders and phobic about venemous snakes. Sounds like you were on...

A few northeast Oregon hunts
Working fall camp trips on a beautiful northeast Oregon river got a little bit in the way of our hunting this year, but hey, who can really complain about getting paid to take your dog rafting down a river . Once the raft season ended, we managed a few good hunts around the Grande Ronde Valley...

Montana Hunt
Headed to Montana on a little bit of a whim to chase some birds. I didn't put in enough off season time keeping the dog sharp, so the first few hunts were a little rough, but we came around. Finding some sharp tails added the fifth species of bird shot over my pup a few months before his second birt...

Eastern California Quail Hunt
Met my dad in eastern California this weekend for his first quail hunt in two years after having to take a hiatus for heart surgery. We found plenty of birds and had a wonderful time. The pup did great giving us many points on singles and doubles and one really nice covey point. Yesterday, we crosse...

Pup's First Season
I've only made a few posts on here sporadically over the last few years, but have been a pretty frequent lurker. I love reading people's posts and seeing everyone's pictures and I've definitely been able to learn quite a bit, so thanks. I got a new brittany pup last January. He's the first bird dog ...

Re: Closing day ... what do you remember most?
I didn't get to hunt with my dog much this season since I go to school out of state. However, while I was home for Christmas break we managed to get out chasing some eastern California chukars for a few days. We only found one group of birds, but after splitting them up Luc gave me a very solid poin...

I hunt them with my french brittany and he does fine for weekend hunts. If the hunt lasts much more than three days though then his feet get pretty sore from running on those rocks.

Re: Quail Population 'The Smoking Gun"
No, I read that. I don't think you understood what I was trying to say. You're saying "uncontrolled avian predator populations are devastating our quail" and that they are 60% to blame for overall population decline. I'm saying hawks are a minority reason for decline. It is true that annually 40-60%...

Re: Quail Population 'The Smoking Gun"
I'm sorry you did not appreciate my humor and I'm not contending that hawks don't account for a large percentage bobwhite deaths annually. However, there is a difference between annual mortality rate and long term population decline. The vast majority of the studies I have read have stated that the ...

Re: Quail Population 'The Smoking Gun"
Wow Neil, you seem to be quite the biologist. I'd love to read your published and scholarly reviewed journal article that explains the decline in quail populations. Clearly, given the 40 years of research you have done and the utmost confidence you have in your scientific conclusion, you must have w...

Re: Looking for some opinions
Thanks Fishvik, I'll keep that in mind. Pepper, thanks for the heads up about "poky" and "5 below zero." Last week over here in eastern Oregon we had some below zero weather and now that you mention it, I was saying minus whatever degrees which probably sounded funny to people who are used to this k...

Re: Looking for some opinions
Hey guys, Thanks for all your input. Fishvik and DGFavor, I am looking at the U. of Idaho, but it costs a good deal more, so it's a little bit lower on my list than the other schools. I'll still probably apply there, but unless they give me some scholarship options I probably won't choose to attend ...

P.S. I really hope I don't sound like a pretentious 20 something year-old. I'm more or less just a bum trying to figure out where my life is going and trying to keep my head above water as I face new challenges and learn new things each and every day.

Re: Looking for some opinions
I definitely appreciate the variety of bird species out here in eastern Oregon, so if it's like that over in Pocatello that's a major plus. DGFavor, I can understand what you're saying about the importance of education. Getting into either of these schools is not a problem for me, though. Could I ge...

Thanks for the reply. Is Pocatello not a nice town to live in? Are there pheasants and huns on public land or will I need to try and meet land owners?
Fishing is definitely a plus I have enjoyed the trout and steelhead fishing out here in eastern Oregon.

Looking for some opinions
Hi there, I've been a lurker for a little while now so this is my first post. I am currently going to college in eastern Oregon, but due to some budget cuts the school is cutting a number of classes that I was planning on taking and narrowing the program I am a part of. With that in mind, I am proba...
