Re: Running Mileage for GSP
Canadian - I know you probably know this, but since you mentioned Las Vegas,I have to mention HYDRATION, HYDRATION, HYDRATION. Always carry plenty of water with you...enough to wet the dog down competely if it needs it, with some left over for it to drink. In the kind of heat that can happen out th...

Re: Running Mileage for GSP
Thanks everyone! I'm getting two basic opinions. One says what I'm doing is fine and the other says she needs a little more recovery. Ideally I would swim her 3 times per week too but we live in Las Vegas and the nearest lake is about an hour away, so I don't swim with her very often. The shorter d...

Running Mileage for GSP
Hey guys/girls. My GSP is now 20 months old. For the last 8 months I've been hiking her every day. I travel about 3-4 miles, which means she's been running 5-8 miles everyday since she's off lead. So for 8 months she's been consistently getting 35-56 miles per week of running without any injuries or...

Re: Wide Running Dog
Hi Canadian, I live in Vegas myself and have a pointer, shoot me a pm if you want to get the dogs together at some time. I agree the 100 yards is not an issue, and also second looking to get your dog on some game birds if possible. Re beepers, I note that with the wind and arroyos here, depending o...

Re: Wide Running Dog
100 yds is really close for a shorthair. Probably all the obedience and recalling before it's out of hearing range. My shorthair will hunt mostly 200 - 400 yds but at times will be out at 800 - 900 yds which often is out of sight. I got an alpha which really makes you feel more connected and the te...

Re: Wide Running Dog
Thanks again guys! I think a lot of my concern stemmed from a trainer I worked with. He told me that a dog who didn't naturally settle into a heel position should never be trusted. I guess that was bad advice. Hearing everyone say this is normal for the breed makes me feel a lot better. slistoe, yo...

Re: Wide Running Dog
fuzznut,
I'll definitely check those guys out! Thanks for the advice.
ruffbrit4,
I'll check that collar out. Thanks for the advice. I might try the Alpha since it give me the eCollar and the GPS in one.

Re: Wide Running Dog
Thanks to everyone for the advice. I really appreciate it. I felt like "she was just being a GSP" but I wasn't sure if it needed to be addressed OR if it was considered bad practice to let a dog range that far. Ezzy333, you mentioned that I may get lost but she won't... One day we did get separated....

Wide Running Dog
I've got a 17 month old female GSP. From the time I got her at 8 weeks, I've worked on training her in some fashion everyday. At 16 weeks I put her through a 10 week AKC novice obedience course lead by a pro trainer, that was followed by another 10 week AKC open obedience course led by the same pro ...

Re: Thinning spot on GSP head?
I just finished going through the same thing with my GSP. It all started for her around 9 months of age. Here is what I learned in the process, and what I did to get her better. What I Learned 1. Demodectic Mange can only be passed to a pup from the mother. Your breeder should know about this. If yo...
