How do you choose a breeder?
My beloved lab is 14 years old on New Years. We’ll be putting him down this weekend. He was just a cheap pup in a newspaper ad. He was a good dog though. I’m not sure where to start to find another one. I’m near reading (southeast) PA. Most importantly looking for family dog since I have a 13 month ...

Re: Running birds question- spaniel
He’s 18 months. Yes all his commands are well ingrained. Collar conditioned. I use him for waterfowl so I cast him so sit on whistle training has been pretty much daily. We worked with pigeons at home and in the field. Quarters well. Only hang up is getting on the scent of a runner and ignoring com...

Re: Running birds question- spaniel
Hup!........... Lets back up a little bit. Is your dog steady to wing and shot and retrieve on command?? Does the dog have a trained retrieved to hand? Without steadiness to wing shot stopping him on a running bird can really lead to some possible problems. Over use of the collar is not something t...

Running birds question- spaniel
This is my springers first season pheasant hunting. He’s doing great. One issue though. If a bird runs a straight line he will go out of range chasing the scent. Reguardless of my whistle or voice commands. No problems on missed birds just chasing that runner. So I’m thinking I need to tighten up hi...

Re: Springer Introduction to pigeon
Read a few but the one I'm following is "Hup! training flushing spaniels the American way". It's very easy to follow and answers most of my questions. If you have another recommendation I'd love to hear it. I trained my lab using Evan Graham's smart works book and videos. Looks like you have everyt...

Re: Springer Introduction to pigeon
Sounds like a real nice pup you have there. Where did you get him? Photos? Got him from Jim Karlovec at flushing star gun dogs in Ohio. http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc35/brad-hendrickson/Mobile%20Uploads/5ACE3289-9855-4714-93C0-0CC3E6C25335_zps7zgsbxrq.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c...

Re: Springer Introduction to pigeon
Great, now get him some live birds. If he's a young pup, start out with it in a cage so it doesn't scratch him or frighten him. I have a vid from when I did this with my young setter. He went ballistic and I knew I had a bird dog! I did. He circled the cage with his tail going. I took one out to le...

Springer Introduction to pigeon
Introduced my English springer spaniel to a dead pigeon. He grabbed it and ran right to me. Made sure he would come my way. He held that bird tight for at least 5 minutes. My training book says to let him hold it a while and praise. How long should I let him hold it until I pry it loose?

Re: Springer training material
I'm in southeast pa. I would definitely get pigeons and all necessary equipment. I would be interested in learning from a club or people with experience. I'm about a year out from getting one and haven't chosen a breeder. Not 100 percent positive yet. I'm so used to labs but want to learn about spri...

Springer training material
Can anyone recommend a springer training book? Interested in them and I would like to read a book on the training. Are there any good dvd training systems out there also? I'm a ways out from getting another dog but doing some research. I used Evan Grahams smartworks to train my lab and it was great....
