Re: Waterfowl Risks
I agree with all the previous postings, but let me add a few thoughts. First start practicing boat work this summer, particularly if you use a canoe. Your swimming, or just getting wet, is better when the water is warm. Practice the pressure on the top of the head method of bringing the dog into th...

Dad, The worst day of my life was when I realized I will never be you. Some of the best days of my life have been afield birdhunting with my dog. Train your pup alone without your other dog present. Introduce your other dog into the equation later. Slow down and relax. Focus on having fun for right now. Find a respectable local trainer or training group to start refining your skills. You will be the one who will need to be trained not the dog...

I have only hunted my springer for upland game, no waterfowl yet. Since I love watching my dog work, I am now finding myself looking for any excuse to have my dog with me in the field. Do you waterfowl guys take extra precautions while afield? I would think having a dog in a boat, out making water r...

I was under the impression pheasants were similar to trout. Once they are born, they are no longer considered tame. I dont think I could catch trout out of the koy pond at Gander Mountain or shoot pheasants inside the bird pen at my rod/gun club.

Re: Front right leg limp/pad injury?
Thank you. The vet did take an x ray and manipulate joint. X rays were negative and the vet said probably a soft tissue injury. Our dog did throw up and refuse to eat for about 12-18 hours so the vet switched over to Rimadyl and Gabapentin. The end result was very good. Leashed walks only while on m...

Front right leg limp/pad injury?
We have a 6 yr old English Springer Spaniel that is house/field. She recently has a decent limp on her front right leg and has been actively licking her what would be wrist area on a human. My wife jogged with her the other night and noticed the limp. Our dog did race down the stairs and leap off th...

whats acceptable for a dog correcting or protecting itself? My 5 yr old female springer corrected a 1 yr yellow lab when my buddy came to visit. Yeah we certainly try to hold our dogs to one standard and only specific dogs fit into that category. I know myself I am inexperienced so I only relate to my own experiences. I think as an inexperienced guy we want our dog to be as versatile as possible. Then later on in life I am exposed to somethi...

I did not look at it from a pointing breed stand point. Thats true I never thought how little a blind retrieve would be needed for a pointer. The running clock adds a particular aspect to the competition as well.

A close friend of mine wants to get a dog but I am clearly bias towards flushing breeds. I have zero experience with pointers. Let's face it , it's a lot harder in training to get to the level of steady to flush shot and fall, and if you get there it's a continues effort to keep the dog polished at that level, once you let down the dog will start to break eventually So the difference is in the training or how good is the t...

steady to wing and shot. If you want your dog to break on the shot because you retrieve more birds that way then you aren't doing your job as the shooter. I would say its definitely safer and gentlemen like in the field. If you have to pass up a low flying bird because your dog isn't steady to wing...

What percentage of you guys use GPS e collars on your long ranging pointers? I can imagine if the dog is ranging 400 yards plus, you must need to have a unit with GPS.
