Re: Tips to make dog stop whining...

Use a figure 8 - see smith silent command website for how to tie one or you can buy. Make pup wear it when he whines, take it off when he stops. He'll learn pretty quick that shutting up makes the figure 8 come off. I would only use it when your around, not to be left alone.

Re: First Grouse

You can gut them, especially if the bird was gut shot or retrieved by my dog. Hanging does a couple of things. 1.Loosens feathers for easy plucking, 2.Gets you past the rigormortis(not sure on spelling) that sets end soon after death. Results in much more tender meat. Cool enough to me means below 5...

Re: Whining

When the pup is old enough for the chain gang you will be able to stop it with the use of a figure eight cord around muzzle.

Re: Whining

You could try the "whinning creates an earthquake" treatment. If you can do it and the dog not see you shaking the crate and you don't say a word. Pup doesn't need to associate it with you but instead with the whinning , the pup will learn that stopping the whinning turns off the earthquake. Worth a...

Re: Some time gunshyness

You can hunt with your friends, just take turns on who gets to shoot. Also don't coddle the dog if she reacts badly(tries to get in your pocket). If you do, your telling pup there is something to be afraid of. If it happens do your best to ignore her and keep hunting as if nothing happened.

Re: Check Cord Length

Someone from Arizona. I think Arlett Hennesy said to buy a cheap Harbor Freight 1/4 inch air hose. Cut the ends off and install a snap. I hooked the snap on by doubling the hose over and used tie wire . Fairly stiff, has a knot below the snap to rap the dogs chin and slips through the brush. Easy t...

Re: First day on birds

Not at all unusual for pup that young to stick by your side. Try fun runs in short grass/easy stuff, pasture works good(especially if there's larks he can chase). Do lots of it, learn all you can about the pup (is he bold when seeing something new, how does he hold his tail, are his ears pricked up,...

Re: Quail Population 'The Smoking Gun"

"Historically, early Bob White quail populations in North America were relatively low as compared with the highs of the early to mid-1900's before we cleared and developed the land. As we developed the land we killed the small hawks; with pesticide, trapping and GrandMa's shotgun. Quail flourished a...

Re: Why is whoa not important

Any well bred dog will point his birds if he sees enough of them. You don't have to teach them any commands, just take them hunting. When my brothers and I were young we'd get off the school bus, grab a shotgun, and let a couple of dogs out of my dad's pen. No training whatsoever. Plus we'd make all...

Re: level of training

Ok. I had kinda come to the same conclusion (just looking for excuse to accept less). More questions. I hunt only wild birds and almost always alone. It is extremely difficult (read impossible) to pay much attention to the dog when flushing and trying to shoot wild birds (even staunchly pointed ones...

Re: level of training

I've always heard that for everything you ask of a dog you're taking something away. I have a dog now that is a fine hunting dog, but hunts with more intensity, points with more intensity and is better handling when allowed to break at flush. Each off season I reign her back to steady-to-shot, but t...

level of training

I know this won't apply to field trialers, but for hunting purposes does your level of training (i.e. broke to wing and shot) depend on the dog? Are there instances we're accepting a lower level of compliance results in a better hunting dog?
