Re: Conformation standards, hunt tests & field trials
My shorthair (male) is 22.5" at the withers and weighs 50lbs. Should he not be bred, run trials, hunt tests, show ring? He's just a hunting dog so I'm not concerned but this has been a real interesting thread. I mainly hunt chukar and I think his size has several advantages for that type of hunting,...

Re: Pointers on the couch???
My GSP was never allowed on the couch, 2.5 years, and never a problem. He was taught early on it was off limits and would hit his bed or kennel when tired. Then came the problem, my girlfriend moved in with her lab mix and that dog is a couch potatoe. My shorthair was confused and I felt bad so now ...

Re: Training in the heat
I'm envious, We've barely hit 60 here in the NW. Pretty much 50's with rain everyday and I'm starting to get a little water logged. Ready for some heat. Back to the question, I think the above suggestions are right on. Morning before the heat or in the evening after the sun has started to go down. I...

Re: For the GSP breeders ?
I apologize if this is a stupid question but how many (a few, some, most) breeders are aware if the dogs they are breeding carry this gene? I will be in the market for my second pup in the next year and LD is something I had only heard of briefly before this discussion. Is it something that I should...

Re: Is now an okay time in my life to get a dog?
Are you wanting this pup to hunt with or trial with?? If so, it might be consideration to send the pup somewhere during that 4 or 5 month period for training. He would be the perfect age to get started on birds and get a foundation built that you would be able to build upon in the future. PM me if ...

Re: Sad story - bird dog bought at "store"
I'm not a breeder not have I ever owned a bird dog that was just a pet but I agree with some of the people above. As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing wrong with a bird dog being just a pet as long as they get the excercise they need. I'm sure there is a decent percentage of bird dogs that don'...

Re: You can take it out, but you can't put it in them.
Congrats to your buddy for sticking with it and finding a solution. It shows that with hard work and some good advice you can usually come to the wanted conclusion. On a side note, it's interesting how much it varies in what people want in a dog, for example range. Where I hunt a big ranging dog is ...

Exactly. If they're honest and find birds, I'll take 'em.Neil wrote:There are guys that go through 100 dogs looking for 2 like these.

Feel bad for your buddy but IMHO it's better than the opposite. Good Luck.

Boom! Go get the shovel.
I wouldn't think twice about it. You have a lot invested and should not have to deal with that or worry about it again. Boom!

Re: What is a gundog?
For me a Lab is the definition of Gundog, they hunt for the gun. Pointing dogs range, find birds and point em. Labs work methodically within range for the hunter, which IMO is a GUNDOG!
Some people are idiots, just try and ignore 'em.

Re: What is the height and weight of your GSP?
I don't know how tall my guy is but he is right at 50lbs, 2.5 years old. Living in the city I see quite a few Shorthairs and they are Gigantic in comparison. I'm always asked if my guy is a puppy. I wouldn't want a huge Shorthair. I hunt chukar at high elevations that I have to hike into for the mos...

Re: Natural Honor
IME, (this is a generality, individual mileage will vary!) dogs with a very natural back tend to also be a little more passive...or maybe stated differently, I've noticed that dominant, bold, hard charging aggressive hunting dogs seem less inclined to hit the skids when they see another dog standin...

Re: Clean Kennels
All of em are different. My pup now (male) is the cleanest dog I've ever had or seen. He has never gone in his kennel and I've had him in there for 8+ hours. He's an odd ball, wont poop in the yard only in the back of my lot were its mainly ivy and weeds. Its actually really nice, not much clean up.

Re: Most unusual cross breeds you've seen with Gun Dogs
Those GSP crosses kind of creep me out, poor dogs. I just keep thinking of my guy stuck in one of those little awkward bodies, can't imagine that would be much fun. I was skeptical until I saw the pics, sure enough. Wierd.

Gordon setters
You should get ahold of R.J. Marquart at Quick Silver kennels in Moses Lake. He has a lot of experience with the breed and he is probably located near you.
