Re: Field Trial Question
first off, a blank shot does not have to be fired in a akc derby to give the dog credit for a find. A dog who is seen with bird contact may be called back to see if it will point,so in my eyes a dog who retrieves a bird has had bird contact. The simple part is this, what did the pup do the rest of th...

Re: AKC field trial question
Honoring with style is about showing your dogs Class and is part of the picture you want to paint A dog who is commanded into a back is taking a hit In my eyes just as a dog who needs to be stopped From creeping in on its bird.it is just not as attractive or as classy as a dog who stands his birds o...

Just remember good judges watch and use everything In a trial. A dog who honors with class is going to look good And a good judge will appreciate the honor remember a honor shows team work between The dogs and is a huge deal when actually hunting wild birds A judge will also take into account your c...

It appears the dog has some serious fear of going outside To be trained. He is avoiding the entire situation. You need to find out if is bird related or just training outside. . I would do any training inside And keep it simple a whoa table would be great He needs to be happy about outside and it wi...

wild birds are the most difficult thing to teach a young dog to handle. the simple answer is to keep running on them it will click. If in working tame birds you are using birds that he can ride in with out them flying off you are teaching the dog that he can get close, wild birds will not allow that....

my old dog max loved storms,he would sit in our bay window and watch the storms roll up our valley. He loved shotgun blasts,he would run toward them. I dont know if handler speed is looked at by judges,as a judge i am watching the dog,not the handler. When I walk and the dog is way out front along with the other dog/handler all I can say is,,my dog better stay broke.. More formal training than a run and gun.Quail will be planted, but under controlled situations. For the two dogs I am working,i might kill one bird each if it goes well.
