Re: Planting pigeons for flushing dog

Thanks for all the good guidance. The reason why I ask about planting pigeons is because I can't find any Chukar this time of year until the bird hunting preserve season starts in the autumn. And I want to get out in the woods with this 1 year old pup to train as we will be hunting ruffed grouse in ...

Planting pigeons for flushing dog

What is the best way to plant a pigeon for a flushing dog where the bird will stay put for the dog to find it without flying off too soon, and not be dizzied so much that the dog catches it?

Re: New Brittany on its way

Right Sharon, Starting a pup on pheasants or even pigeons, could flap in the face and cause injury to the eye or frighten the young'un. Traditional "Whoa" training ruined my setter after 3 months with a well respected "Pro". So I wouldn't recommend any technique other than the Higgins method and tha...

This vid will help you.
Pull a few feathers out of a quail and let your pup bump and chase and catch some birds.

If the pheasants run your dog will know before you. Allow him the freedom to move, pin the bird and repoint.

"Pointing Labs" is an oxymoron. Kind of like "gay marriage". It doesn't make any sense! Labs are to flush and retrieve. If a lab doesn't have the aptitude to retrieve then it is poorly bred. It needs to find a new home and be a family pet. Maybe it will fetch a tennis ball. Please, give the dog a li...

FT dogs not such good hunters

Observation written by Brad Harter. http://www.fieldtrialpointers.net/amesbirds.html I've been away from the computer but have enjoyed reading all of the comments concerning the bird situation at Ames. Many of you have touched on what I feel is a multitude simple to have just one or two factors that...

When a dog learns to make a wide circle on a running pheasant in order to pin the bird between it and the gun, the dog has managed the bird.

When should we allow the dog to learn to correct itself, versus us correcting him? Vernal Pike The word "correct" above has a different meaning each time it was used. The Point is that I have experience with other types of heal training.
Irregardless of the technique, this leash design has been by far the easiest to use.

I was curious more about how polished of a dog you may get the longer you work within the Higgins System. Using field trials as a basis because I know what a champion looks like and hunts like.. How about a perfect NAVHDA score! Click the link below. http://higginsgundogs.com/forum/higgins-gundogs-...

Use the Higging technique. Worked great for my Setter. A lot easier than the Visla in the vid. Got the leash from Higgims on the web site. I've done AKC obedience stuff. I have experience. The Higgins leash is the best by far. So easy! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I3FEQcCY1E0 http://higginsgundogs.c...

Mr.Higgins,

Would you please put up this video again?
I used to have a Weimaraner that had no desire to find birds. But she loved to retrieve. In fact she got excited only when the gun went boom because that was her que to get a bird. Wonderful house pet though.
