Re: Arizona quail

Lots of worries on here about nothing. When the rain stops the birds will all be gone, hunters will stop coming. Rain returns in 10 to 20 years birds return, first couple years no hunters, 3rd and 4th year hunters everywhere, drought returns, and cycle repeats. Hunting does not have a negative effec...

Re: Arizona quail

Simply research some weather and you will find quail in the desert. A hot spot last year could be a horrible spot this year. Eastern NM is loaded with blues when it rains, some years a limit by noon is easily done. When it does not rain like this summer, could likely be nonexistent. Gambels are on ...

Re: Surragator--Do they work?

I had a friend try for a few years, did not work. A few may live, but very few. Biologist would recommend stocking birds if it worked with long term results. Does it work for guided hunting yes. The birds will make it through a chunk of the season. The best method for stocking would be wild birds tr...

Re: Anyone used an Ecollar with a Brittany

4 Months imo is too young for any breed, I use the ecollar for to add pressure at the correct time, not for a correction or to stop bad behavior. When you are in the field and use an ecollar it is not to scold the dog. The dog needs to know everything you want before you ever make corrections with a...

Re: Is Texas the poorest state for public land?

Just a note....IF, Texas had more Public land then that would not guarantee that Texicans would not go to, say Kansas, to hunt. More is involved in travel destinations, especially as regards birdhunting, than Public access. The People own only some of the land in the United States. While I w...

Re: Is Texas the poorest state for public land?

If you owned land and saw how many hunters leave the area you would understand why they do not allow hunting anymore. We have a farm right next to public land that does not allow motorized vehicles but it is free hunting. I can't tell you how many times the fences have been cut so they could drive ...

Re: Is Texas the poorest state for public land?

Most public land is land that nobody wants or can afford to own, in other words worthless. Other areas cost a lot and and if government owned does not generate any taxes for the local taxing bodies, so the public is pretty much against losing it. There is a lot of public land in the mountainous sta...

Is Texas the poorest state for public land?

I can not think of a state out west that is poorer in terms of public land for hunting than Texas. There is very little public land for the population and land area, if you want to hunt private you must pay. Am I missing something here? Is there opportunities to hunt without a fee and without a leas...

Don't waste your money. Get a walk in atlas drive and hunt the fields, you will kill your limit of pheasants each day and have an opportunity at quail on the correct sites.

Walk a dog up to one and show it how to go through them correctly. It takes a few times and a pup has it down. Hunted around barb wired fences my entire life never had an issue, but always show puppies how to get through them. Had a friend his dog got tangled in some that was wound up in a ball left...

Re: Snake in the yard

There is no evidence the so-called rattlesnake "vaccine" works. Leading veterinary centers, like UC Davis, recommend against it for showing no demonstrated efficacy. On top of this the manufacturer, Red Rocks Biologics, says very specifically that their shot does not provide protection against veno...

Re: Retrieverless

"Pointing Labs" is an oxymoron. Kind of like "gay marriage". It doesn't make any sense! Labs are to flush and retrieve. If a lab doesn't have the aptitude to retrieve then it is poorly bred. It needs to find a new home and be a family pet. Maybe it will fetch a tennis ball. Please, give the dog a l...

Re: Retrieverless

The cure would be go to the basics. The dog must not be whoa broke and been on enough birds to develop a true point. Start with the basics go back to pile work, then go to using dead birds and then pen raised birds where the situation is controlled. Many labs that are pointing labs will flush especi...

I do hose it down afterwards, and use a cleaning product that attaches to the hose. https://www.wysiwash.com/ Thank you for your help. It was an interesting problem I encounter after years of a sand based kennel.

They can be useful to locate birds but usually takes around 20 minutes after the flush, and if they know you are in the area they will not whistle back if they can hear you or your dogs. I simply whistle back and that seems to be as effective as a call.
