Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

That is the subject. According to you. Which is the entire problem with this thread. You/Ray think a 50-100 yard dog is irrelevant and useless. And when a guy disagrees with proven dogs...you cut on us both because it makes you feel better about yourself. Reminds me of liberal snowflakes. Anyway......

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

He meant what he said and said what he meant...and as an after thought.... scaled it back. Useless and Irrelevant are pretty much synonyms.

And BTW...we both know Ray wasn't talking about dogs that don't get out to just 25 yards.....

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

Umm.....here is the exact quote: I personally have no idea why. I always thought that if a pointing dog never got out beyond gun range, they were pretty much useless...well maybe not useless, but certainly irrelevant. If I have to walk there anyway...why feed a dog to go find birds I was going to wa...

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

No...my attitude came from Ray saying dogs that hunt close are Irrelevant and useless. Read his first posts..... What more does it take to P**ss a guy off?? And I didn't really ridicule them as much as you guys did mine(aren't trained, can't hold a point). I just more or less said I don't want what ...

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

And for those of you who think your dog points EVERY bird in a field it encounters...you apparently haven't read the data from the studies done with radio collared Bobs. Even the best dogs miss nearly 40% of the coveys/birds in the field. And Slistoe..I know you as well. My dogs can hold a bird as l...

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

Ray started this post with nothing more than what those in the know call, "trolling". Just like he used to do on PDJ. Gumboat. His total intent was to get someone like me to bite and take him to task. I noticed how no one here...even Ezzy, who is known to run this place with an iron fist...never com...

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

Oh...and those of you who think my dogs aren't trained well, you are showing your ignorance of hunting a half section(or more) of 2' + tall milo stubble in a good wind. It's so noisy you can't hear the voices in your head if you have any. And for those of you who haven't hunted in tall grass ...

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

I guess my whole point(sorry) is that Ray got on here and said that those of us with short range dogs are "useless" and/or "Irrelevant". Well, I guess the 31 birds(phez and Quail) I brought home from Kansas, all on WIHA ground this year BTW, should just be thrown into the trash can then, huh? Oops,3...

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

Yes, I have hunted behind trial/AA/long range dogs. I thought I made that obvious. Seen my share of dogs who run like their tails are on fire and outrun their noses. Good times. As for checking your GPS on where the dog has been, what do you do if you look and find out that the pup HAS missed a good...

Re: Are bird hunters afraid of field trial dogs?

I like to actually SEE my dogs hunt and read their body language. That way I will know what they and the birds are doing, especially on running Pheasants so I at least have a chance on birds that have been highly educated by the 4-5 weeks of other hunters before I can get out west to hunt them. How ...

I had my dogs in for their shots and told my Vet about this thread. She studied the claims that were made here, did her own research and then called her former Professor at Perdue who is the most well versed on this, and then reiterated to me that the new Lyme's Disease vaccination is 80% effective....

And there are still people who believe dogs don't have feelings, that we project our human feelings onto the dogs.

Yeah, ok. 5 years later and the dog just makes this up by chance.

Re: Things I have learned in the last month of pup being home

Puppies love the older dogs food much more than their own. Puppies lungs and vocal chords are obviously made of a material not of this world whose power exceeds that of a Nuclear Aircraft Carrier, especially at or about, 3:38 AM. Puppies teeth and nails are made from the sharpest material known to m...

My friend's dog showed no signs of any problems which is standard when the incubation period can be as long as five months or better. I actually had the same line of thought as yourself with my two Britts. Once they were gone, that would be it for me. I'll have to respectfully disagree with not getting the Lyme's Disease vaccination. It is true that it had only about a 40%-60% effective rate but, as told to me by my Vets(I have more than one), the newer formulations, if you will, are now at a good 80% rate. I have had the misfortune to see a frie...

Sounds to me you need a fuzzy faced dog like a Draht. Most of them are smart as can be, were bred and built to point, retrieve both on land and in water, hunt fur, can easily handle cold wet weather, and are great pets to boot! Plus girls love them especially when they are pups!! Shorthair's ...

I have not only seen the dogs become less steady on point...I've also seen fights break out. It's great if the dogs work well together but, if not, not. One could always get a pointing dog and just teach it to flush on command. That's what I do. You have a dog pointing a Grouse in an impenetrable ta...
