Transitioning away from Check Cord
Good morning everyone, I have been training my 1 year old GSP Duke his entire life with the check cord (Lead rope). He has recently been introduced to the e-collar and I have been working with him on that. This past weekend I planted some birds for him and with the lead hitched around his waist he d...

Re: Anyone send their pup to training? In MICHIGAN
Talked with Charlie and we out for a meet and greet session. Decided to go with Charlie and I will be sending out my pup at the end of March for 2 weeks. From the meet and greet it seems like Charlie knows what he is doing, he seems like he has a Masters Degree in hunting dogs, birds, anything hunti...

Re: Anyone send their pup to training? In MICHIGAN
Yes, as a matter of fact we have been training with Bill at Colonial farms twice a month since I got my pup. Im looking for a place that will board and train him for a couple weeks at a time (6 days a week, constantly on birds, etc). Ive heard of many places doing this but it seems like everyone shu...

Anyone send their pup to training? In MICHIGAN
Looking to send my GSP pup to training where he can get more exposure to birds, hunting, pointing, basic commands, etc. Ive heard of places taking dogs for a month at a time and training almost everyday on birds. My GSP is just over 9 months and I feel right now he needs as much exposure to birds as...

Re: Pointer's first season
Glad to hear your pup is doing great in the woods! Im in the same boat, with my pup being 9 months old this is his first season, took him on one hunting trip 2 weeks ago and going on another one this weekend. He flushed and chased his first wild bird but after many tries and lost birds he started to...

Re: GSP's First hunt 9 Months old
Great advice, thanks for the help. I am going up north this weekend to hopefully get him on some grouse and woodcock. I plan on keeping his check cord on him in hopes to whoa him if he locks onto a bird. Best of luck with your training, getting them on birds can be the best for them, keep up the gre...

Re: GSP's First hunt 9 Months old
Thank you for the dropping techniques and I will use them on the next dog I get on down the road but as for this pup the problem was solved. Yes I have tried everything, grabbing his haunches, lifting him in the air, flicking his nose, training with a brush, squeezing his ears, squeezing his rear ha...

Re: GSP's First hunt 9 Months old
You dont know the background of the dropping issue. He would never drop, he knew what the command was with toys etc but when it came to birds he wouldnt let go. We would have to pry his mouth open and even then the bird was trashed. Once he squeezed the bird so tight in his mouth the guts came out o...

@Gonehuntin' why do you say I really need help with my pup? Do you think his actions are not on track or far off for a 9 month old pup? Any suggestions on what type of training I should be doing in addition to the whoa training?

Re: GSP's First hunt 9 Months old
So far I feel that I have him on a pretty good program. Every afternoon I will take about 15 minutes to whoa train him. I have started with the barrel and now onto the ground with a check cord hitched around his waist. I can now whoa him, drop the cord and walk a circle around him at any distance, h...

Re: GSP's First hunt 9 Months old
Yes I have a trainer in my town we see 2 times a month. We have not introduced the e-collar yet other than once and I was not a fan, but I feel like this is the only way to get to him while he is running. I dont want to punish him when he comes to me after chasing.

GSP's First hunt 9 Months old
I was finally able to get a weekend off and take my 9 month old gsp out in the Northern Michigan woods. Put up about 20 birds in 3 days and killed about half of that. Since this was his first hunt I just let him run, he finally got the hang of things after an hour in the woods and ran about 15 yards...

Retrieving great but will NOT drop
I have a 7 month old GSP, he is great at retrieving downed birds, toys, tennis balls, anything you throw for him. When he fetches and brings it back to you, it is always a struggle to get him to drop especially with birds. This past weekend in training he went to retrieve a shot bird and held onto i...

I have had the same issue as your having, my pup is 7 months old now. I first started off being gentle saying no an...

Re: Pup Growls at people (HELP)
Got it, thankyou. Took him to training yesterday and he got to play with the trainers dogs, at first he was timid but started to mess with them (Not growl or bite but go up and nip them or grab their ears) and they didnt want to take any crap, he learned pretty quick to not mess with other dogs. Ive never had a dog act out like this so im not sure what to do here.
