Re: New vehicle
My truck had an ARE cap on the back. It was awesome for season but I didn't like keeping my dog back there in the summer. I would usually end up letting him ride shotgun with the ac on blast. For those of you who have SUVs and hunt multiple dogs. What do you do if you need to let a dog rest and you ...

New vehicle
Well my truck got totaled (everyone is ok). So now I need to find a vehicle before the season opens. I'm looking for something reliable, safe, large enough for kids, 4wd/awd. I'm looking at the 4runners but my only question is what do you do with dogs you are not hunting? Idk how I feel about rollin...

Re: GoPro questions
I have a hero4. Price I'm not sure since it was a gift but I think prices are consistent. I'm sure Black Friday or cyber Monday will have some deals if your into that. Mine has the fido kit as well that includes a dog harness. I recommend getting it. It's cool for open areas but any thick brush a bi...

Re: Combo shotguns
Thanks for the advise. I didn't know about the frame difference, I think that may be something to consider. Hopefully I can find a place with a true 28 and combo to compare how they feel. I never thought about doing reloading, guess I have some more online research to do. Thanks.

Combo shotguns
I am getting excited to go hunting after the long wait. I have spent some time looking at shotguns in the mean time and saw they have combo shotguns. I had always thought it'd be nice to try a 28 gauge but I was worried it can't be used for all upland game. The past couple seasons I have been using ...

Re: SAD but TRUE
I somewhat agree. I have an apartment and my dog spends more time in the field hunting wild birds than most people. I think the apartment factor holds me more accountable to keep him active even in the off season. Nothing wrong with people who don't hunt their hunting breed dog. There are plenty of ...

Re: Growling
Minigooch, I think moving the around will help prevent him from being as territorial with the food. It may do nothing but won't hurt to try. Also, maybe see if Cesar Milan has anything on the internet about this. He seems to have a good program for correcting behavior for house dogs.

Re: Second thoughts
I agree you should look into a rescue. Not sure where you are located but google southeast gsp rescue. Or just do some searching and you will find one in a rescue near you. For exercise look into dog agility, there seem to be clubs all over. If you are not a distance runner they have these attachmen...

Re: Growling
I wouldn't trust a dog that growls at my kid, if I couldn't fix it he would quickly become an outdoor hunting only dog. I would continue to have your son be the one that feeds him, try to change feeding in different rooms as well. Also, have your kid whoa the dog then have him fill the bowl and have...

Re: What hunting trip or destination do you dream about?
I would like to get a travel trailer and pull it to Wisconsin to hunt grouse and woodcock all of October. After that hit up the Dakotas for pheasant for a month or so, then go to Arizona and New Mexico for quail in the colder months. It'd be around a 4,500 mile trip for me.

Re: Steady to release or flush?
I will break him to voice release. No tap just because I don't want to go into the briars to release him and second if you cripple a bird, that is likely to run a voice release would be faster. That's my opinion.

Steady to release or flush?
I have a 3 year old setter that is steady to flush. He is force fetched and good to hunt with. Currently my number one priority is hunting wild birds and traveling to try different types of upland hunting. I do not trial but if i could see myself doing some walking trials in the future. The question...

Upland blogs
What are some of your favorite upland blogs or social media icons for upland hunting? I have noticed other sports/ hobbies have an abundant amount that are pretty entertaining. The majority seem to be created by hunters. Are there any well known field trailers with any?

Re: What to pack for hunting trip?
Thanks to those who contributed. Yes, I just ordered an astro for this trip. I will be with a couple experienced grouse hunters as well. My dog is heavy in grouse lines so I think the transition from wild quail hunting in the south shouldn't be too bad. I'm creating a first aid kit, I'm sure this co...

Re: What to pack for hunting trip?
Rabies certificate, immunization schedule, local vet numbers and directions. That's a good point, I had not thought of bringing. Boots I have covered, I got a pair of waterproof/insulated wolverine boots that are super comfy. And I have a $10 pair of puddle stompers which you can't beat. After spen...

What to pack for hunting trip?
I'm heading to Maine in Oct. I'm just looking for tips of what to buy/bring. Iv never been grouse hunting and never been to maine. What's the weather like? Tick repellant? I have a brush vest for dog, gps collar, bell?, first aid kit and my fall/winter hunting clothes. Are my insulated hunting boots...

Re: What ecollar? And GPS?
Let us know how the astro works for you. I am considering a gps collar as well. And I also have a delta which was a waste of $200. Luckily my dog is older now and I don't really need the e collar but that first year he could run through it if he wanted. Currently I use a bell which is great for quia...

Shaking before a hunt is normal. My dog does before I release him for the hunt or if we are at the river and he wants to swim. It's just the adrenaline and excitement. Barks and whining at birds I haven't dealt with fortunately.

3 in the house = no problem for me. Of course I'm not super fussy about a perfectly clean house. If your wife or husband is then .................. Only time I regret it is in the Spring when the backyard is mud. Of course a new pup ha sits own challenges for year one. :) I notice a trend of more v...

What are the pros and cons of having more than one bird dog in the house? I have one well behaved setter and have been contemplating getting a second hunting dog.

Check out http://www.gundogdevelopment.com/#!/ . I got a pup from here a couple years ago and am very pleased. I even take him back for training in the off season and stay in contact. He has several great lines including Oak Bo. Generally Setters are great house dogs. Anyway give it a look, hope thi...
