Re: anyone hunted ND or SD yet
I hunted South Eastern South Dakota last week. Birds were down about 1/3 in my estimate. There are still birds to be found. We did kill mostly young birds.

Re: Quail Hunt
I put these out close to home. You know school teachers can't afford those expensive preserve hunts. I hope your dog is ok. We need to get together and work dogs during Christmas break. I went to South Dakota back in November. It was too warm for the dogs but we did bring home 40.

Quail Hunt
I put some birds out for my young pointer Belle and my setter Sally. Birds flew well and dogs did great. The days of finding wild birds seem to be over here in Tennessee.

Re: pheasants and quialhunting
Never hunted in Nebraska, but I spent the hottest day of my life in Beatrice. I played baseball for Hutchinson Kansas in the old Jawhawk league. We played at Beatrice sometime in July of 1980 and it was 107 with about 85% humidity. The ball field was surrounded by corn fields and boy was it hot. I r...

I have new to me Browning Auto 5 20 gauge with a fixed skeet barrel. I also have a 28 inch plain matte Belgium barrel, full choke in unused condition. I am a quail, dove and pheasant hunter and would like an improved or modified barrel in addition to the skeet barrel. I have been trying to sell or t...

South Dakota 2012
I recently hunted public land in southeast South Dakota. My wife went with me for the second time. She doesn't hunt, but does all the driving and spots birds. We took a pointer and 2 setters and had a big time. I believe the bird numbers were down by about 50% from last year, but still averaged abou...

I have 3 young dogs, 2 year old female EP and male and female ES coming up on 2 years old. I recently purchased an e collar with the intent on keeping the dogs in range. It is working out real well with the pointer. She knows now that I need her to stay in contact with me. The male setter doesn't ra...

I will be retiring in about 5 years and I have hinted to my wife and girls that I would like a nice 12 gauge for my pheasant hunting trips. My wife doesn't hunt. Just drove and helped spot birds. She drove the truck and blocked for me. She really had a good time. The pups did good in the CRP grass. Female likes to run, the male is going to stay close looks like.

Yes. They did ok at times. They got turned around in the sloughs a few of times. Did better in the CRP grass. A learning experience for all. They got the idea of what it is like to travel 14 hours. Learned to eat and drink when needed after a couple of days. Both pointed a few times (hens) and worke...

I feed my pups Diamond puppy. 30% protein and 20% fat. I have a 9 month old pointer and 2 setter pups 3 months old. Also, about 4 days a week, I mix a can of tuna with their feed. Local Kroger store has tuna 50 cents a can. I use about 8 cans a week. I believe they get a little more protein and some...

I have a 10 week old English setter pup that had a tick on his head about a week ago. I pulled it off and now there is a puffy lump. Not too big, nor does the pup act like its bothering him, but it is evident by looking at him. It was 10 degrees when I pulled it off. I have never seen ticks in the w...

My wife is planning on going with me to South Dakota next November. She won't be hunting, but will be walking and taking pictures. Probably will not walk in any sloughs, but I think she still needs waterproof boots and some insulation. I don't want to spend a lot as she probably won't use them much....

Re: Bird Hunters in TN
I live in west TN, near Memphis. I'm down to one 7 month old EP now, so my dog power is not what it used to be. I have found 3 wild coveys this year. During the early 90's, I had 55 coveys marked on a map within 30 miles of my house. New subdivisions, roads and such have made it hard to find birds. ...

I had a dog that would do the same thing starting at about 8 months old. He would find birds and then relocate when I would get close. He would even relocate when another dog got close and then back that dog. I suspect he was blinking. He never was gun shy, but I think he was a little bird shy on th...

I have hunted WIHAs in Kansas and South Dakota.
Pros- varied locations across both states with numerous tracts to choose from. The maps are easy to read and the locations are easy to find.
Cons- a few, especially in Kansas lack suitable habitat.

I assume you are hunting pheasants. I use Winchester steel 3 inch 1 1/4 ounce 3 shot. We hunted lots of state and federal lands that required steel. I was doing so well shooting steel, I kept using it even on private land. I didn't want to change from lead to steel every time we got out of the truck...

Re: SD and hunting road ditches
The rules for road hunting say that the bird must take flight from or be flying over the right of way. It is not ethical or legal to have your dog flush a bird on private land and shoot it while you are standing in the right of way. A downed bird can be retrieved if you are unarmed. It is not legal ...
