Re: Whoa the dog or let him chase?
Did you do the training or did you have it done? Answering the question responsibly sometimes requires what you might feel is invasive discourse, but I don't think folks mean it that way. I am betting the dog is still pretty young and by your comments, the fun you get out of this is more the result...

Re: Whoa the dog or let him chase?
Yes. You have an untrained dog. Train him.
Well it's hunting season so I'm not going to spend my days off doing that. In the absence of a controlled environment how else should I proceed? He has had a fair amount of training I feel like I'm just reinforcing it the correct way.
To be ...

Re: Whoa the dog or let him chase?
Time to go back in training. He is not steady. Get him steady around birds in a controlled situation first. ( backyard, launcher). Yes. You have an untrained dog. Train him. Whoa the dog or let him chase?
The situation: We are hunting pheasant or quail and he gets too close and either flushes the pheasants or bumps the quail out a bush. Either way he was too close. Should I let him chase the bird/s or should I whoa him and make him watch the bird fly? In heard that they learn well by losing a bird th...

Re: Quail issues, bumping
He pointed pheasants without ever being trained on quail or pigeons? All I have worked had to be trained, some more, some less. They didn't come out of the box ready to go. We need details on what you have done so far. You need to find a book or video, or better a training group. He has worked with...

Quail issues, bumping
So we went quail hunting yesterday. I live in California so that means walking thru large chaparral bushes. We busted three coveys but not really off points. My dog would go up to a bush a start trying to work his way into the bush flushing the quail at too far a distance for me to shoot. This happe...

Q5 centerfire vest
I really like the wing works vest but I feel it might have a little less storage than the q5. Anyone tried both? This would be a vest for carrying a ton of water, lunch for me, first aid kit for him, shells, jacket, remote, and maybe a couple other odds and ends. Thoughts?

] It is too bad when we have people who claim to be hunters get upset when someone shows concern for safety issues. That said I would guess that I will continue to be a clown as I enjoy it a lot more than being stupid. Being a clown is fixable while being stupid seldom is. Hope you are one of the fe...

Re: West coast folks
Come up north a bit into central california around like Fresno I think you might have a better look. And for the record who cares what you do with your gun around your dog. If those two clowns dont want to hunt with you maybe they shouldnt invite themselves. Just wondering who the two clowns are th...

Tracking collars
I want one. Sounds like an awesome way to relive some of our long distance hunting days. See how far the dog traveled what speed. Elevation all that.
Who has one? Which ones are best? How much should I spend? Any other thoughts?

Wing works vs q5 centerfire
Need a chukar vest. I rock my filson strap for pheasant but I need to carry more water when we go for chukar. Live in CA. One dog and me.
I always hear that wingworks is very good but the q5 also seems nice. Just want to see if anyone has used both. Thanks!

I hunt birds. Quail chukies fez and grouse. No trials for me. Yet. I have a shorthair. 13 months. Beast mode. Likes to be called Bentley. I need help corralling him from time to time. Thinking about a pro trainer.
In other news, I'm a long time lurker and finally decided to join up. Teach me well.
