Re: Flusher or pointer
That's a good looking dog and a good looking point!Devilscreekw wrote:Walking to the mailbox yesterday. 8 month old pup. Ruffed grouse in the fenceline. Pretty much says it all.
Re: Finally
Yeah I was able to get him into a covey of quail and that's when it all came together for him. I have a 9 month old pointer pup that found his first covey today. It was great to watch him get a nose full of that scent!
Finally
Feeling proud of this pup. He's a 1 1/2 y.o. and I almost wrote him off because he didn't seem to be catching on. I kept giving him opportunities and one day everything clicked. Points backs and retrieves. Cant keep from rootin' for him. Makes it worth the while.

Re: What time?
Mainly quail here. A few woodcock from time to time. I was just curious to hear if others had a favorite time of day to hunt. It's interesting to hear about the other game birds and their characteristics as well.

Re: Missouri opener
Deer hunting has ruinined quail hunting and coon hunting. Everyone leases ground to bring people in who will pay to shoot a deer and the guy who has grown up on the joining property can't even step foot on the leased ground. Gets pretty frustrating but there's nothin we can do about it

Re: Flusher or pointer
There's nothing like watching a dog lock up on a bird and hold that point for you. Especially their first time. I hunt for the point. I don't care if I shoot any birds with the exception of a good retrieve. But that's just me.

What time?
What time of day do you have the most luck finding birds? Is there a slow time at midday as a result of birds "loafing" in wooded areas? Are evenings the best due to the covey gathering up for the night?

Re: Johnny House/recall pen
i currently have a small cage that can hold 8 birds easily but they can't fly and therefore lose their ability to fly so I wondered if a Johnny house would enable them to exercise their flying muscles. Then hopefully they will recall so I can continue to use them for training. Thanks for the input

Re: 20 or 28 for quail?
28 shells are going to cost more than a 20. I used to carry a 12 and recently switched to 20. The 20 with a modified choke will reach out and touch them fairly easy so you won't have to worry about tearing them up at close range

Hunt Test
Does anyone know of any hunt tests in south central/south east Illinois?
