Re: bones for a puppy
As for a puppy, I would never give them a bone, as already said, more bad than good! I also stay away from the traditional Nylabones, but the ones they make that are white, with a rubber toy built into them are good, you can check these by putting your thumb nail on the Nylon, and if it is somewhat ...

KyleRay........... This is perfectly normal for an 8 month old pup! Rarely have I seen a dog that age that is completely trained on recalls, heel, etc. If you don't believe me go watch a few field trials or hunt tests watching dogs that are less then 18 months old. Good training and Maturity are two...

Usually, I start our on day one teaching basic obedience and by 12 weeks we go to a gun dog puppy obedience class. I start them on pinch collars in that class to teach heel, sit, and recalls in a classroom sitting. From that I transition, to yard work following a specific program that I have used in...

Re: Running and barking at strangers?
Is your dog obedience trained? Does this dog stay on heel until released? Do you have an obedient 'recall' on this dog. If any of these are not in place, go to another or an obedience class and get the basics trained. Dog don't do bad things, they only do bad things when we fail to train them. If yo...

Our female Golden Retriever had this same problem. We also did all the tests and spent lots of vet money, but never got a clear answer. Our vet noticed that when our girls squats to pee that she really did it lower than most dogs, and thought that might be part of it. He also had us start giving her...

I can see that many are confused or have information that is inconsistent with most FF training. Since a couple of you have mentioned Evan Graham, I will quote from his SMARTWORKS for Retrievers, Volume one, Basics and Transition, Chapter 6, page 47 "Force Fetching -- This is the core of the system"...

I believe that humping is purely a dominating instinct. Unless you have an intact male with a female in season, obviously... Therefore you decision to stand over her is a good reaction to establish your dominance with her. I also would pick her up (upside down) and hold her in my arms for a minute o...

Re: Thoughts on Kansas and SD in December
Living in Missouri, I have fairly easy access to both SD and KS. SD has by far more birds than does KS, although with a good dog and a little luck, limits can be taken in both states. I personally would focus my time on SD, just because the numbers are higher. Do your homework and be prepared for an...

Sometimes the 'simplest' solutions in training are the best! Stop using these for training. "Pointing Labs" is an oxymoron. Kind of like "gay marriage". It doesn't make any sense! Labs are to flush and retrieve. If a lab doesn't have the aptitude to retrieve then it is poorly bred. It needs to find a new home and be a family pet. Maybe it will fetch a tennis ball. Please, give the dog a l...

Most Retrievers are trained using e collars. But, before you ever use an e collar your dog must be Force Fetched and then Conditioned to the e collar . Using an ecollar without these critical steps can ruin the dog for hunting purposes! So try none of this without professional help. To do a good job...
