Grass alternative
Currently I have a fenced off area that's about 30' x 10' for the 2 dogs (GSP's) to take care of their business or to spend some time outdoors while I am doing things around the house. My issue is that it used to be grass but its nothing but dirt now and I am tired of washing muddy paws after or dur...

Looking for a name
About to purchase a female puppy GSP. Already have a male that is just over a year and he is named Jaeger - all black Roan GSP. She is also a black roan but not fully like he is. Any suggestions?

Re: Berreta 391 Urika issue
What shells do you shoot? Do you always use the same ones? I heard it was a shell problem. I think it was federal I am using high brass Remington Express Extra long range shells. Its definitely not the shells in this case as the issue only occurs when the metal gets cold. 45 or below and the action...

You answered my question perfectly! I used my Beretta oil so I wasn't sure what CLP was. However, sounds like I will be purchasing it and applying it to my 391. Thank you!

Berreta 391 Urika issue
Not sure what's happening but it seems like the whole action gets "tight" when its cold outside. I have had a few shells last year that did not cycle because of this but since its been warmer than normal this year, so far no issues cycling. But I did notice that tightness again last week when it was...

Re: Protective vest
I was talking to a fellow trialer this weekend at a cover dog trial about protective vests. He pulled out a Mendota (?) vest and said after he held his buddies dog on the drive to the vet after it got impaled with a stick he doesn't hunt without one. It looked much like the vest above that SHaRPS p...

GSP's for life. Loyalty, drive to please, drive to learn, intelligent, great house dogs, amazing bird dogs. And they like to swim for an added bonus.

I don't think it makes a difference. Each dog has its own personality. That being said, I prefer male GSP's only because they seem more independent.

Legal hunting hours end at sunset in RI. I am pretty sure my state stocks birds AFTER sunset unlike what it sounds like with others.

I have never heard of a dog being severely injured by a porky. I have little experience with them but am wondering how many of you that run into them often have ever had a real problem ezzy333 - again, I have no experience with porcupines other than what just happened to us, what I witnessed, and w...

Just had a porcupine spear my dog 3 days ago. I am a FIRM believer that his skid plate saved his life seeing where the majority of the quills struck him. before the incident, he had no issues with it on. The one I use on him is sold at LL Bean for $50. I highly recommend it (no Velcro) That sounds ...

Well minigooch, believe it or not but my dog god quilled! What an awful experience! about 100 quills and I was able to remove all but 1 right where it happened, 1 mile from my vehicle on a mountain. The last one was stuck in his knee joint and he wanted no part of me touching it. He had them all ove...

Re: How to cook whole pheasant?
Little trick for the pheasant tendons - place legs on edge of table so that the meat is hanging over almost an inch. Snap the bone in this part with hammer or whatever. Now you can use pliers to pull the tendons straight out of leg. This is done best once the bird is aged (but does not have to be) s...

Get a large pan and fill it up with cut onions and some olive oil. Cut dove in half right down the spine and place on top of onions. cover and let this cook on med low heat for about 40 minutes stirring every 5 minutes or so. I like to season with pepper and salt. this works great with liver, any sm...

My pup got it from eating grill grease, lost 8 lbs in 4 days and did not look good at all. Slept all day and one of the days, he could barely keep his eyes open and was extremely lethargic. He even had night tremors from it. He received IV's, some meds to settle his stomach, meds to help get his sto...

Beautiful Pup! Enjoy, I am on my third GSP now and I wouldn't trade them for anything. They grow FAST so enjoy the puppy stage. For a tip, daily exercise will make life easier. Here is my pup Jaeger. Now 11 months old and over 70lbs. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e71/SHaRPS123/20150314_113632_zp...

Grouse / Woodcock NH
Anyone here hunting upstate NH this year? Just over a week left until opening day and I am trying to pull the trigger on a trip. I have an 11 month old GSP and would love to take him up there for a day or 2 but with a 6 hour ride but hunting alone in the big north woods is a bit intimidating when tr...
