Trekmoor, your strength permeates this medium. I am in awe!
You are an inspiration and serve to remind me personally of the things that MATTER in life.
May the good times be at the forefront of your memories and may those that love you most surround you.

Re: How to teach "turning"?

Forgive me Bill. But is an HPR not a retriever? I reviewed Mr. Higgin's video. I believe he demonstrated a pointer. Mr. Higgins, Arthur Schopenhauer wrote that truth passes through three stages. They are: Firstly, it is ridiculed. Secondly, it is violently opposed. Thirdly, it is accepted as being s...

Re: How to teach "turning"?

Trekmoor/Polmaise, we need to extrapolate that flushers and pointing dogs are diverse in how they apply themselves.
The dog in Mr. Higgin's video did a nice job minus the hacking, toot tooting, arms flailing, etc.
It's all too rare whatever name you prefer to call it.

I have had customers come here with scabs on her hands/wrists or bite marks! I ask, "What happened there?" Next thing you know, they are crying!?!?! Re: Tracking dog miles

Sorry CJ. What I meant was, if you measure miles in an environment where there is less cover and the temperature isn't as grueling as in hot hilly places, juts looking at how far a dog ran isn't really comparing apples to apples. So, if it's -15 and flat ground with few trees, your dog could go XXX ...

Gonehuntin, I appreciate your point. It is founded on the same principle as guyS running two (or more) dogs at once. Get a setter from cover-dog breeding and start the pup right . It will handle whatever you hunt. That said, it's hard to beat a well-bred pointer for heat. A cover-dog pointer started right would be the ticket but you should get whatever you wish. My setters did well in heat BUT they needed time to ...

Polmaise, I'm not disputing your observation however I'm confident this dog will retrieve to hand. It just isn't "there" in it's training and we don't know what the owner did with this dog if anything, in it's puppy stages.

Weimdogman I agree, a 28 gauge on wild pheasant or chukar wouldn't be my caliber of choice BUT a good shot can do well with a 20 gauge on both. A bad shot won't do any better with a 10 gauge. There are SO many variations on what we hunt, where we hunt and when we hunt. If I was to pick a species alo...

Ryandoolittle, whether it's dogs or jeans or whatever, "the market" too often determines the cost, not the performance/value. Perhaps the price some breeds command tells you something about them, OTHER than their value? You can pay a LOT of $$$$ for a designer dog. Also consider that some breeds com...

I wish I could help. Anytime I've run dogs on pavement, their pads got stronger and stronger BUT, I didn't run them as near much as you do. Max, I like to suggest you redirect your pup when he gets unruly. Use a clicker and "charge" him. Now, use treats and lure him into jumpin...
