Abrasion on nose

My Brittany has developed an abrasion just behind the nose on the snout. It’s from going though thick grass while hunting. Are there any tricks for minimizing this in the future? It’s not super bad but I want to make sure I am doing what I can to keep it that way. Thanks in advance for sharing your ...

Gun dog for a guy in early 60's

Thanks for some great insights everyone . I am mid fifties with my first dog a Brittany that likes to range out there. I really like hunting pheasants with him. I was wondering what to do next time and this thread has provided a lot of good information.

Seeds in Eye

I never had a dog get seeds in his eyes. So I do not know this But what would you look for in a puppy's eyes to tell you they would not get seeds in them.........................Cj He blinks one eye at a different rate than the other. Actually the vet only found seeds the one time. The other time n...

Eyes are an important thing to be concerned with when breeding as there are eyes that catch every piece of debris and those that don't and I am sure you are beginning to see the importance of looking at eyes when picking a pup. We hunt about 25 - 30 times a year and run all the time and only have h...

Seeds in Eye

I flush with saline and haven't needed a q tip. I find it easiest to straddle the dog and squeeze him between my knees, open the eye with one hand, and squirt with the other. It takes a little practice but you should be able to make it work. It's amazing what can come pouring out of those eyes. Tha...

Seeds in Eye

The last two years my dog has gotten seeds in his eye when hunting a certain kind of cover. I think they are wild asters or some kind of wildflower but they are very thick, have millions of seeds, and the pheasants seem to hang out there. I have taken him to the vet both times for removal. Has anyon...

Quail Pen in Yard?

I have a similar situation. I have a dog training grounds and my neighbor has a dog kennel turned quail/chukar pen. His dog still circles the pen until she is called off and mine started ignoring it after a day or two. However when my dog sees me leave the house and walk over to the pen he goes craz...

Remington 1100 Special field. they have a shorter stock shorter 21" barrel, more lively feel especially for a smaller person.. Check them out on Gunbroker.com or other used gun sellers. If you want her to continue to hunt with you, buy her a nice gun, something she'll be proud of and doesn't beat h...

My wife also took up bird hunting a couple of years back and goes with me about 5 or 10 times a year. We had one heck of a time finding something she could hit targets with. She is 5'6" tall so about average size or just a little above for US women. To make a long story short she needed both a short...

Guys. Thanks a lot for the candid feedback. Just so you know this is my first dog. I didn't realize launchers could actually cause problems with some dogs. My buddy also has a 3 year old and he points launchers just like anything else but he hasn't hunted nearly as much. I was just trying to have so...

My dog, a 3.5 year old Brittany male is steady on birds when hunting. We don't have any problems there. For a long time he has known when we are training. He knows when birds are in a launcher or otherwise confined and acts completely differently. I have manual launchers and he actually stands back ...

Hello, I found this site a few months back and really liked the posts. I am the owner of a 3.5 year old Brittany and hunt with him as often as possible. I look forward to talking to all.
