Run the dog with beeper in point mood. Train the dog that when he's running and hears the beeper go off he is to check in with you. Don't worry about him going on point hearing the beeper and coming back to you. All my dogs would check in when I used the locate button. And hold point with the beeper...

From my experience once they keep their crate clean then you work on house with supervision. I've got a 3 month old that has never mest her crate. And only dribbled 3 times in the house.
Just saying.

Have you taught him the kennel or crate command? All 4 of my GSP's will kennel up on command. It's their den home safe place.. Don't feel bad about crateing him. Not all places are dog friendly.

My take on this is he learned if he makes enough noise he will be let out.
What does he do if you crate him when your in the house with him.?
6 hrs straight is not to long for a 1 year old.

Please be very care full when you do have to break up a fight with your dog and another. Your dog can turn on you trew no fault of his own. It's called a reactionary bite. He could perceive you touching him as the other dog doing it and wheel around and bite your hand not the other dogs paw.

If you have a big enough training area. You could just pull 5 flight feathers off each wing toss the bird a let him chase.
