Re: Tips for getting a dog to hunt in thick brush

Get into the cover with him. He'll follow you. Go slowly. You beat me too it but the pup should not be expected to hunt heavy cover alone but rather hunt it with you. This happens more often with short-coated dogs but will improve as he gets experience so it basically will take time on your part as...

Re: Looking for my first O/U

I just bought my first O/U after 4 years of drooling and debating between options. I agree with what others have said here. Number one is fit. You don't aim a shotgun, you point it. Bottom line if the gun doesn't fit you won't hit your target. Consider getting a proper gun fitting to find your stock...

How thick brush are you talking about? I had the dog's in sagebrush a week ago I couldn't see much over and haven't a clue where the dogs were. Doesn't do a lot of good to take dog's into stuff you can't even shoot in much less see the dog's. I hunt mostly farm land not a whole lot of super nasty t...

If you have a solid recall, heel, and can stop your dog whether that be with a whistle or verbal command you will be good to go with moving on to more hunting specific work. Those are the commands that will keep your dog safe. That being said I don't wait to introduce birds and guns.

I have always just brought the entire bird home to clean later that evening or the next. I just keep the birds in the truck bed until I get home. Yes, I don't really feel that any gun over $1000 is going to kill birds any more dead than a $1000 one will. Not to mention its going to get scratched, used in th...
