Re: Whoa Post-Neck vs Flank

My thinking is that you want to differentiate between the two, stim on the flank reinforces whoa. It likely creates less confusion.

Re: Bits

The hackamore with bosal is traditional vaquero tack. Instead of reins, a long ropelike mecate is used. Do not be mislead, a bosal in the wrong or untrained hands can be very harsh. It's no more 'natural' than a bit. I attended a trial where the wrangler had a mule with a ruined mouth - the result ...

Re: Searching for my next hunting dog

If what you are looking for is pheasants, some waterfowl and you have a pointing dog, why would you not buy a lab. I guess I'm not all that impressed with most of the breeds people buy just to be different. A lab/pointer pair is impossible to beat unless you just wanta be different.

Dogs do much better metabolizing fat as their primary energy source than they do with burning nutritionally unnecessary carbohydrates. Dogs have zero nutritional requirements to consume carbohydrates. They are in dog foods to lower costs (only). That lower cost comes at the price of reducing a dog'...

Re: Gun Shy or Gun Sensitive

I was in the same situation, hadn't had a dog for years, but there weren't any quail here either in Missouri, and I grew up in the late 60's and 70's. I live just down the road from Perfection Kennels, and a buddy gave me his DVD's. I didn't use a .22 at all, just a 28 ga shotgun, had my son fire th...

Re: What type of shotgun are you using for your bird hunts?

I shoot quail and pheasants with a 28 ga Ugartechea sxs, and have for years, even SD pheasants. It is IC/Mod, shoot an ounce of 5's on pheasants. I recently got a Fausti Dea SL 20 ga sxs that I like a lot, so may use it some, but the 5-lb weight of the Uggie is pretty attractive! I shoot my old 1100...

She's definitely birdy and will chase. Your approach is what I was wanting to do, but I didn't let it fly when she wasn't acting like she had a scent. The launcher is new, so I'm thinking next time I load up some birds, I'll put the launcher in the cage, so it has some bird smell rather than canvas ...

I have always been old school when using birds, Live bird Launchers are just to darn contrived and artificial. The more technology the more that can go wrong keep it simple. Learn to plant pigeons quail and chukar. Of all the all the training birds Chukar are fool proof to plant. Easy peasy! https:...

A few things come to mind: Don't use smelly lubricants on the launchers, no WD40, Hoppe's, etc. Don't bury the launchers in heavy cover when scenting conditions are lousy. If you can, train early when conditions are better. Be sure you're reading the dog correctly, that she isn't blinking the launc...

dog ignores birds in launcher

I have just started working a pointer on birds. She is working well, but I want to use the launcher so I can flush pen-raised birds at will. My dog doesn't seem to pick them up when in the launcher. Of course it's summer, hot and dry, not the best for scent in general. Has anyone ever seen this?

Here is my six month old, Bailey. This is third time, but we've only put out ten birds total, it's been so hot, even in the morning/evening about 20 minutes or so is about the max. that is where the ecollar comes in. I had my malinois at about the same age, heeled perfectly with a loose lead. Unsnap her, and she went straight to play mode. It took one ecollar correction to fix her, she knew what I wanted, just knew I couldn't make her do it!

Re: LOP too long. Cut stock or sell gun?

If it's just mounting the gun, a dremel to round the corner off the top side of the pad might change everything. That said, it wouldn't take me thirty seconds to decide to cut a bit off the stock. Whoever said to take 1.5 inches off is an idiot. If it was that much too long, you couldn't even shoot ...

Jays right you set the dog up, (I've used my deck with the same screw eye I hang deer with) then you run a rope thru a pulley on that eye to the dogs choke collar and when he goes to bite you, up he goes. You hang the pup till he passes out, it's ain't pretty and timing is important but that's how ...

First of all, it can't be a reputable breeder if he produced and sold a pup like that. The pup is mentally unbalanced. Second, the breeder should take him back, no questions asked, and refund your money in full. Third, the Alpha roll is a very dangerous maneuver and I don't recommend it. Fourth, th...

By the way, don't euthanize the dog, he may make a good dog. The right person can fix him, but it's not the kind of correction that a lot of people are capable of using.

Having handled a lot of aggressive dogs (GSD, malinois, dutchies) when training dogs for protection, there is a way to stop this, but from what you wrote, I don't think you are capable of it. It is one of those things you have to do sometimes, and it usually works because the dog is somewhat thankfu...

I don't have a Caledon, but have a Fausti Dea SL (sxs) 20 ga. It is a very nicely finished and fitted gun and I like it a lot. I have two of older Dogtras and a Garmin XC. There isn't much difference, to my view, other than the Garmin can handle additional dogs, and the battery life seems to be better. The dogtras that I have are pretty basic, which isn't a bad thing. If your dog knows the command, knows what he is supposed...

I am not particularly a fan of the Ruger Red Label, but that is mostly personal. I have shot a bunch of birds with a 28 ga, including lots of limits of pheasants in SD. I normally shoot the Win 1 oz loads of 5's or 6's at pheasants, and it works quite well, at least to 35-40 yards, which is a pretty...

I have an Ugartechea 28 ga that I love and shoot well. Unfortunately, they closed up shop recently, but there should be plenty around in the $700-$1200 range. They are light, straight grip, double trigger guns for the most part and point like a bird gun.
