Re: Tone and vibrate commands

The terrain differences and type of birds is like comparing apples and oranges. I have a GPS collar on the dog and when he goes on point my handheld will tell me, I can also see the direction he is running and how far he is at all times so there isn't any issue about calling him off point. As soon a...

Re: Tone and vibrate commands

Using Tone or vibration electronically communication sounds good from the marketing scenario used " The whole premise of me using the vibrate and tone is to give him silent commands to heel, come back around or stop what he is doing and find me when he is out of sight or when birds are close by and...

Re: WSF

Great dog! By not having homing pigeons an assistant or a place to shoot that isn't an hour or more away I would have to figure out a little different procedure. What I do have is a decent field that often has wild quail and dove in it so I do get to work him on wild birds year round but it isn't a ...

Re: Tone and vibrate commands

What is the transition trainings to the dog behaving to the learned trainings of tone and vibrate when they are no longer on the dog ? Or is this a forevermore. I am not totally sure what you mean by "forevermore" but the dog has a good base of verbal and whistle commands so I can hunt him no probl...

Re: Tone and vibrate commands

Beautiful dog and nice job pursuing your training goals. Couple of thoughts. I use the tone for silent recall. If I just want the dog to tighten up or change direction, I continue walking in the direction I want to hunt and let the dog swing to the front and keep going. If instead I want the dog to...

Re: Tone and vibrate commands

I conditioned mine to here with vibrate but only use it if he blows me off. The vibrate function puts more pressure on a dog then stim. People think they're being kinder by using vibrate instead but it's the opposite. However it's justified if the dog isn't responding to recall. There's no wiggle r...

Tone and vibrate commands

So I have been working on a heel command using the tone on the collar and a here command using the vibrate. I am finally starting to see some constant results so I took a couple videos to show the progress, I forgot to show me hitting the tone button for the heel command but I hit it one time right ...

[quote]Early development is how I have done it. Taking the puppies into cover when they are small enough that they are not comfortable being on their own for too long and then they naturally will be looking for me. My GWPs have strong natural tracking skills and have quickly learned to loop and cut ...

Re: recall to whistle versus e-collar tone recall

I can often get this dog to hunt 50 to a 100 yds but if the birds aren't there his area continues to get bigger and bigger which is what is needed out here, if I were to keep him in that range I would have to constantly be handling him and that goes against what this EP was bred for. An example woul...

Re: recall to whistle versus e-collar tone recall

I have also been using the e-collar for recall on my 2 year male old EP, I use the tone for the dog to come all they way back to me and heel, and I use the vibrate to get the dog to turn or at least look for me when I change directions and both of these work pretty darn good.....but, I seem to need ...

post hunt effects on dogs

I am curious as to how other dogs physically feel after a couple days of hunting. My EP pup started this hunting season 3 months ago as a one year old and now he is 15 mths of age, I know he is young and I have tried to be easy on him but he has no intention of taking it easy, He averages 8 to 11 mp...

Re: Big runners and heavy cover

We finally found an area that had a bunch of birds, lots of open country and a perfect amount of thick cover, I let him do his thing in the open and when we went through the thick areas (which were not huge) I worked on turning him close with the beeper and saying "stay close" at times I would not u...

Re: Maps on GPS tracker (onXMaps)

After looking into this it sure looks like you need an onXmap chip to use it with your GPS, since you have a subscription you should call onX and see if they will sell you a chip at a discount, it's worth a try! Although if you always carry your phone with you then just use the phone separately from...

Re: Big runners and heavy cover

It really is a fine line between letting him work and loosing control, I will work on reading the situation quicker and the timing of commands (no nagging) and I'll try not get to frustrated if I miss the mark or if he gets away from me once in awhile. I also think that I need to do the heavy cover ...

My on x chip works in the Astro 430 and from what I understand the 320 can take an on x map chip as well, just open the slot behind the batteries and stick it in and your ready to go.

How the heck do you work heavy cover with a big running dog? it just seems so inefficient, unproductive and out of control, LOL spoken from a complete novice! Re: Pointing Dogs and Sitting

I think the issue would be that when you say sit it often gets followed up with a whoa and that would be the conflict, the only way to work it would be to teach sit followed with stay and not ever use whoa after saying sit. LOL if that makes any sense. I have yet to teach sit and my boy is 1 year ol...

My thought was to get rid of my Oregon 600T GPS to help fund the Astro 430 and collar
