Re: I need some phez hunting
We spent 5 days week before Thanksgiving, hunting WIHAs only. Tough, tough hunting - Northwest Kansas, mostly out from Colby. Not many birds at all. We only shot about 10 birds and walked lots and drove even more (about 200 miles a day). Locals said between the drought and spring/summer hail - birds...

Re: New Mexico snipe?
I love hunting snipe too, but I live in the Fort Worth, Texas area, I hunt snipe east and south of DFW area. If you get over this way, let me know, if the weather is right, we can go shoot (at) a few of the little darters! It's pretty dry out where you are, the habitat snipe like would be hard to fi...

Coop color
This probably a dumb question, but does the color of the coop matter? Most of the one's I see are white or light colored - didn't know if that was on purpose or just what people had on hand.

Re: Built the Johnny House...But quail are killing each other
My recall funnel is about 4 inches off the ground, do I need to make something so they don't have to jump up there or will they jump up there to enter? Is there a chance that since it's breeding season they won't come back but instead look for nesting sites? Thanks for all the info.

Re: Building your first pigeon coop.....
Very nice, I have a question. How do you catch the birds when it's time for training? My coop now is smaller and it seems like I spend almost as much time trying to catch the birds in the coop as do I do using them for training. One word of experience, my dogs love to stand by the coop and catch the...

A buddy and I have a special bridge where we catch them. We were out there one night and TX Highway Patrol came rushing up with lights ablaze. They asked what we were doing, we showed them our pigeons and they said have fun, be careful. (They thought we were spray painting the bridge.) We discovered...

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for but, Texas Parks and Wildlife has a Youth Hunter Program. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/youth_hunting/tx_youth_hunt_program/ http://www.tyhp.org/ I usually guide upland hunting for them once or twice a year. Excellent Program. Maybe something ...

Re: Petsafe inground fence question
I'd put the wire on the near side of the driveway. Like someone said, you can turn down the range and you should be OK. I have to run mine in the eve above my patio so the dogs can get up there, so I run the wire overhead and turn the range down then bring the wire down to the ground at the fence. I...

Okvet, I understand the concern from your side as well and do understand that you have to keep your clinic open and I'm willing to pay reasonable prices for necessary services. I can't justify paying the outrageous prices for the easy stuff, not for vets, not for car mechanics, not for plumbers, etc...

Cooperating with your Vet
We have small kennel, Bird Dogs for me and Yorkies for my wife. We don't raise a lot of litters, but with 10 dogs total, I do as much of my own vaccinations, worming, (preventive maintenance), etc. to keep our costs down. Our vet won't treat anyone's animals unless "they" did the vaccinations. We on...

If you want to do some public you can get a Texas Annual Hunting Permit ($48). Matador WMA is a short drive from Wichita Falls and if you want to drive 3 hours or so, you can go to Gene Howe WMA near Canadian, TX. Your non-Resident license isn't too bad just to hunt birds (5 day, $45) and your son's...

Re: Fire Ant attack
We have those things here like crazy. I hate them! My dog picked up a dead toad that was covered with them, she got lots of bites in her mouth. For the legs, just make sure they don't scratch them till they get open sores, which you're doing with the cone. Maybe your dog is just more sensitive than ...

I'm with you CR. Happened to me, neighbor's dog kept harrassing my livestock, dogs, etc. We each had 10 acres. I told them that if I saw their dog on my property again, I would shoot it. They blew me off. They called a few days later to ask if I'd seen their dog? Hmm... what dog? SSS if you know wha...

South TX is a big place, but generally expect sharp rocks, sharp thorns, bugs (fleas and ticks) and rattlesnakes. Warm days (80s) and cold nights (40-50s). DUST, DUST, DUST.

Start your pigeon coop now. I waited until I was ready for them and then I had to wait for the birds be homers so they could be reused. Pigeons are lots of fun too.

Re: Bridge Pigeons
We catch them all the time here just west of Fort Worth. The trick is to find bridge structures that are steel with lots of cross-members. I have a fishing net taped to a swimming pool pole - will extend to about 20 feet. We have caught very few with the nets extended full length - too much time del...

I frequently exercise my two dogs (Vizsla and Brittany) near the river (one of the Trinity forks). There are a lot of trees and undergrowth near the river and as the dogs were running they knew the river was close so off they went for a swim. Running with full steam they jumped the bank and suddenly...

Thanks, I was training first and then exercising - duh. I'll switch that around and see how that goes. I also noticed that if I put the bumper in my back pocket he was crazy to get it out, but if I hold it in my hand, it does focus his attention and helps a lot. He will recall from anywhere, so that...

I'm a long time lurker, and have learned lots from you guys and gals. I live just outside of Fort Worth, TX and love dogs and bird hunting.
