Grouse hunters near fort drum

Just looking for folks that hunt grouse on or near Fort Drum that are willing to take out a new guy. I have a dog, but no idea how to find grouse up here. This will be my first attempt.

Re: Retrieving

T dog, Following on with the information in your second post and others. I develop natural/play retrieve in my puppies from a very early age and ride that horse as far as it takes me. I use narrow alleys constructed of snow fence along the wall of my machine shed with the end blocked off with straw...

Re: Retrieving

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, i will not be able to send my dog to a pro trainer. I have a dead bird he loves to retrieve and he loves the bird bumpers. Ill try backing off the hunting as you stated Bill T. Ill probably also start looking into e collars. Boykins are sensitive dogs so im not ...

Retrieving

First off, i am not a professional dog trainer. I am a hunter who wants a hunting dog... not a field trial dog. I have a 6 month old Boykin. He is steady, although he no longer likes bumpers but prefers dokken dead fowl brids. He cast with platforms, heels, works to the whistle etc. I am training hi...

Re: Casting

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into training groups in the area. Yes I am a first time retriever trainer. I'm not looking to do field trials or hunt test. I just want a good duck dog and one I can train to flush fall turkeys. My dog isn't quite 4 months old yet. The only casting I've introduced is...

Re: Casting

Thanks. I'll look into the Larry book. I currently use several other books: Dokkens retriever books, and the wildrose way. Unfortunately neither really covers the stopping during a cast to redirect. I like the Hillman videos, but they're a little expensive for my budget.

Casting

So my dog is casting pretty well and steady to release for bumpers. I have a couple of questions though. I'm trying to incorporate the whistle to get him to stop mid retrieve and cast to another bumper. He's sitting fine on the whistle But when he's running the line, he's too excited to notice the w...

Neuter

I recently read an article in Gun Dog magazine about neutering dogs. It basically said that many veterinary studies indicate that it is beneficial for sporting dogs to delay neutering/spaying. My vet mentioned the same thing during my 10 week puppy check up. Just wondering what you guys think about ...

Re: pup biting

I'm new to this forum and the game of dog training. My pup bit with a bit too much gusto, and I corrected it by using a coyote mouth call. When he got too aggressive, I did a pup distress whimper on the mouth call. If you hunt yotes, and are decent on a mouth call, it may worth a shot. Worked for me.

Re: Tick preventative

MonsterDad, yeah he's got clinical signs. He's been unable to stand up for two days, and his back legs are swollen at the joints. We brought it up at the vet and they ran the blood test. I can't do anything for him if he than give him the doxycycline and hope it doesn't shut his kidneys down. I'm fa...

Tick preventative

I have two dogs. One is a lab mix, the other is an 11 week Boykin pup. They both went to the vet today and my lab mix tested positive for Lyme disease. We got the doxycycline for him. They are both on nexguard and the lab wore an over the counter tick collar. I checked him as thoroughly as possible,...

Hi. My name is Paul and I am new on the GDF. I'm 38 years old, active duty Army, married with three kids. I've been hunting since I was 12. I've fairly new to waterfowl, only about ten years since I started. My passions are turkey hunting and ducks. I have an 11 week old Boykin I hope to train for f...
