Re: French Brittany pup hyper and wild
Everyone, thanks for the comments. I haven't had a dog for 45 years, so your advice is really valuable to me. I live in town, so I can't always let him run like I would like. There are Wildlife Management Areas within 30 minutes of town and I have relatives within an hour that farm. However, when we...

French Brittany pup hyper and wild
I took ownership of an 8 month old French Brittany that has been kept in an outside kennel with many other French Brittanys. He has not had much exposure to people, but the breeder did bring him inside for a couple of weeks before I picked him up. I have him outside in a large fenced in backyard wit...

Re: Brittany outside in doghouse
Everyone, for those that what a dog house in colder climate I want to share what I learned about the Hound Heater Plus product. Now that I added weather stripping to the ceiling of my insulated dog house, the Hound Heater Plus is doing the job. I had installed the 'Heavy Duty Dog House Door' and the...

Re: Brittany outside in doghouse
Sirs, thank your for your responses. If it gets too cold outside, I am just going to keep Toby in the basement wire kennel and walk him in the morning, afternoon and evening. Above all, I want to do a good job of caring for him. My wife is home much of the day, so that will help for keeping an eye o...

Brittany outside in doghouse
I will pick up my 8 month French Brittany next week, Dec. 19 or 20. It is below zero here right now. I have built an insulated dog house with a 'Heavy Duty Dog House Door' installed. I have mounted a 'Hound Heater Plus' in the inside of the insulated dog house. My digital thermometer reads +23 degre...

Re: Hound Heater plus for small dog house
Everyone, when I had a German Shorthair long ago, that dog was never in the house. Now that I live in such a harsh climate, I want the dog inside in the evenings and also for socializing or just fun. My question is regarding what you and the dog do when it is in the house? Does a younger dog, want t...

Re: Hound Heater plus for small dog house
C.J., I didn't provide all the information to you. The 10 ft. X 10 ft. Preifert kennel would only be used in the spring, summer and fall to keep my dog out of the mud and facilitate clean up. In the spring, summer and fall seasons, we would let the dog out of the kennel to roam our large fenced in y...

Hound Heater plus for small dog house
I live in MN where it was -30 F last winter. I want to heat my insulated dog house. I thought the Hound Heater plus with thermostat might solve that problem. My dog house is 24 inches X 36 inches floor with about a 2 ft. height. My concern is that the manual on the Gun Dog Supply site states that th...

Re: training a pointing breed to sit on command
Steve and Gone Hunting: it is only with a humble attitude that I ask the opinion of those on this forum. With the answers the two of you have provided, I can now see the value of teaching my dog the 'whoa' command and the 'sit' command. The breeder is willing to help me for a small fee and encourage...

training a pointing breed to sit on command
My pup is 5 weeks old now. I am really looking forward to taking ownership (French Brittany). I went to visit the breeder and he didn't understand why I wanted to teach my dog the 'sit' command. I told him that I wanted that command to keep my dog under control when we go in or out of our house or w...

Re: outside kennel arrangement for old inside dogs
Does the Hound Heater work for a single dog house of dimensions 36 inches X 24 inches? In other words, can I install it and use it successfully in that context? My dog house is made of wood and has double walls to provide an inner layer of foam insulation between sheets of plywood.

dog's paws and ice water
Currently in mid-March our neighborhood sidewalks are full of ice cold water and slush. I noticed my neighbor was walking his Pit Bull on the sidewalk in front of our house. He is a nice guy, no criticism of him is intended. Is it O.K. for the dog's paws to walk it through ice and slush? What about ...

Re: male or female puppy
I really appreciate your interest in my gun dog future. I probably didn't communicate very well. I had an English Pointer quite a few years ago and trained it to the extent that a field trial person bought it to compete in amateur events. The English Pointer would point a pheasant and hold the point...

Re: male or female puppy
Guys, the reason I sold my English Pointer and later my GSP is that I was going to school and was in a Fraternity. Somehow girls and beer got the better of me. Then I went to graduate school and was too busy for a dog. Then I got into riding horses and owned a couple of them. For my own goals and li...

Re: Weather and Habitat Make or Break our Bird Numbers
How about doing something about it? You can buy a Federal Duck stamp and the money goes to purchasing Waterfowl Production Areas. Maybe you aren't a duck hunter, but the duck marshes and reeds provide the important winter cover for upland birds. I am on the banquet committees for the local Pheasant ...

Timewise, I have never owned a French Brittany but I am going to buy a puppy this spring from Mark Dinesmore. Mark posted that he has a few extra puppies that are not yet born and is taking reservations right now for a confirmed litter. His facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/LEtoile-du-Nord-...

Re: Black Bear encounters when training?
Guys, thanks for the information. I can't carry a shotgun in WMAs in August or March as I think it is illegal. I will not be planting any birds in WMAs as I plan to train my dog strictly on wild birds. I don't want my dog broke to wing and shot. I will just put in more time finding wild birds as I w...

Black Bear encounters when training?
My relatives in the area where I want to train my dog on wild birds have observed a Black Bear during the spring, summer and fall. I will be getting a pointing breed dog in June, 2019. In the Minnesota Wildlife Management Area (WMA) (where the Black Bear was observed) I can train a dog except for Ap...

Re: male or female puppy
Everyone, thanks for all the information, it is priceless. I will stick with my choice of female pup and have it spade after 12 months or so. Also, I got to thinking that it would have been unfair to the breeder to ask for a pup of a different sex so late in the game when most or all of his litters ...

Re: male or female puppy
This is what is so awesome about the Gun Dog Forum. I can read false narratives on the internet by people that may or may not have credibility. Then I check with the experienced trainers on GDF and get information that I can trust. CJ, why does the 10 month female wear a diaper in the house? Is that...

male or female puppy
I have a reservation for a French Brittany puppy to pick up approximately June 1. I have always had female dogs. It has been 45 years since I had a dog. I never had my English Pointer or GSP spade but I did not have either very long as I sold them. Right now I have a reservation for a female pup. I ...

recall to whistle versus e-collar tone recall
I have been watching Jeremy Moore's DVD 'Gun Dog Puppy Training'. He uses a whistle to teach the cue for recall. He doesn't use an e-collar and he thinks an e-collar often does more harm in the hands of the amateur trainer. I have a reservation for a French Brittany pup for June 1, 2019. I plan to u...

I am 65 years old and will purchase a French Brittany pup in June, 2019. Back in the early 1970's I had an English Pointer that I later sold to be a field trial dog. Then I purchased a GSP named 'Shot' that I really, really enjoyed. I trained Shot myself on wild pheasants in Central Illinois. Shot w...
