Re: Proper use of the Check Cord

Thanks everyone. A prong collar was my next consideration. Does anyone have experience with head halters? I have seen people use leads and rope to do a similar thing as a head halter but was wondering if the pinch collar is just more effective since that seems to be the more commonly considered tool.

Proper use of the Check Cord

Been working on obedience for the past 6 months with my 1 year old Lab/Pointer mix, we got her at 6 months old. I am still have issues with Heel and getting the Dog to understand being released from heel. She has learned Heel and release to OK through clicker training but she still wants to pull on ...

Astro 430 and OnX

Does anyone know if the Astro 430 is compatible with eh OnX Hunt Chip. According to the OnX website the GPS simply needs to have a microSD slot which the 430 does have. But OnX doesn't list the unit as a compatible GPS Unit even though the Astro 320 is. My educated guess is that it would likely not ...

Re: E-Collar Technologies UL-1202 vs Dogtra

I currently employ the UL-1200 and I think it is great. You can expand the 1200 to the 1202 to accommodate multiple dogs so for now I just use the single until I decide I want another pup. It is my first Dog so I like the low stim levels, which I think gives more more room for error with corrections...

Re: Nevada Chukar?

Hahaha
I sort of expected as much in response but thought I would see if I could gauge the overall like or dislike for the public lands out there. Sometimes you just might hit those far out shots, sometimes you don't but you gotta shoot to find out.

Nevada Chukar?

Gearing up to put together a busy season this fall 2019 for the pup. Coming from Southern California, wild birds except quail are not exactly the most common on Public land and it is usually CDFW or NWR land. Not looking for anyone's spots or areas. But want to get peoples opinions the state of publ...

Re: Sitting on "WHOA"

I am also experiencing this. Now we have limited opportunities for birds right now so yard and field practice have been emphasized a lot. She is pretty steady to the release command but again if she is walking towards me and I ask her to stop where she stands she sits. Is possible she still isn't un...

Re: A Novice and his Dog

Thanks for the advice. Deciding on Pointing vs flushing dog is still a battle for me since we have had limited introductions to birds. I got her when she was 6 months so I have not had any chances to see her instinct come out but she has done what appears to be a point. I have been heavily focused o...

Re: Building Better Retrieves

I really appreciate all the positive feedback and that there are a lot of people focusing on fun and encouragement over applying lots of pressure. This is my first gun dog and so I am at times struggling with how I get the dog to continue to learn and be engaged and get better and simultaneously not...

Re: Building Better Retrieves

Trekmoor Is there any good reason for training your dog that it must deliver from the at heel position ? I am assuming that this is what you are aiming for ? We recently had just begun working with a Sporting Dog Club in my region so I can get some advice and help from experienced handlers and trai...

A Novice and his Dog

Hello All, My name is Connor and I am currently raising a 1 yo Lab/Pointer Mix. She has been showing good signs in her obedience and retrieving. I am new to gun dog training and appreciate the wealth of knowledge available here. We are located in Southern California but my hope is that she will soon...

Building Better Retrieves

I am working with my 1 yo Lab/Pointer mix who was doing what appeared to be solid retrieving as of late. It was recommended to me that I start having her return to heel to finish the retrieve. Now she is dropping the bumper. I was wondering if anybody had any tips on this. I did FF work with her whi...
