Re: Why Purina Pro Plan?
I switched to Purina Pro Plan SPORT. And it’s been about 2 weeks and her poop really hasn’t hardened up that much. A little soft and a few small straggling poops that are really soft. She’s 1.5 yrs old. Had normal poop pre Sport. Should I switch food or will she adjust? Thanks Sent from my iPhone us...

Training / hunting question - missed shots
Thanks everyone! I’m pretty sure the trainer I had her with only trained her steady to wing and to fetch. She’s 1 years old. It’s her first hunting year. But I’m 100% convinced I need her steady to shot. I’m scared to death I’m going to shoot her when I take her out. This is my first hunting dog and...

Training / hunting question - missed shots
The last time I took my dog out hunting, I missed a few shots and wasn’t able to shoot the bird. My dog took off after the flyer and was relentlessly chasing it all over and far. The small nicks I was giving her, to come back did nothing. So I cranked the collar up and zapped her good and while givi...

Re: Small stick or long thorn under skin
The veterinarian recommended surgery, but didn’t even say it was critical. He said you can do it now, or you can wait to do it. That was his recommendation. It was a weird experience honestly. I asked him if I could push it out my self and he said, He couldn’t say to, because of his position, but th...

Small stick or long thorn under skin
There’s a small stick or thorn under my dogs skin near her sternum. Right under the surface. The vet recommends surgery to remove it. And he’s giving her pain meds and antibiotics for now.
Is it possible to just push it out? It’s about 2” long.

Southern California recommendation for hunt clubs
I’m getting my gsp back from her trainer in a couple weeks. And I want to take her out for a good hunt when she’s back. I know Of a few places like tejon ranch and a couple Bakersfield, but I was wondering if anyone here had any good recommendations for a hunt club in SoCal? Thanks Sent from my iPho...

Re: Looking for training in So Cal
Bob and Beth at sporting dogs B & B are very good. They give the dogs a lot of personal attention. Their facility is immaculant, clean. Sometimes Dorian has so many dogs, i wonder how he gives any dog some personal attention. I don't know Dorians personally. If you are interested in being involved ...

Re: Looking for training in So Cal
Figured I resurrect this old tread instead of creating a new one. Seems like the below list of trainers are all mentioned several times on this forum over the years. Note- I have a GSP and not a French Brittany like the original poster. How am I supposed to know who to go to? Do I just base it on pr...

Rattle snakes and a pup
Sporting dog B&B, Bob Worell near Gorman CA, does snake avoidance with real snakes.Google them. Mojave Green rattlers, the anti venom does not work for this snake. It is prominent in the high desert. I had 7 in my yard last year. My dog is completely trained. she scents them , moves off a way. give...

I was going to start looking into it. But I think you can pair with a Garmin watch. Easy way to see where your dog is without having to hold the remote.

Re: A little venting about my neighbor. Not that interesting
Thanks everyone! this turned into quite a bit of info to digest. I have zero experience with bird dogs and how to train them. I had the videos Perfect Start/finish and pretty much have only been working on the basics from that. I'm just in the begging stages, where I plant a bird and keep my dog on ...

Re: A little venting about my neighbor. Not that interesting
An update. She actually went out and bought me some pigeons! She gave them to me last night and with a big apology. She said in the moment with the kids it was this whole “free Willy” thing. And they all got carried away. We talked for a bit and things smoothed over. But now, instead of rats with wi...

Woman, late 20's, lives in your building, wants to replace your pigeons...sounds like a date. We are somewhat friends. I guess one of the young kids was probably wanting to free them- Young girl in her teens. Here in Santa Monica, Los Angeles- CA. Everyone is a "bleep" activist. So the girl probabl...

A little venting about my neighbor. Not that interesting
So on Friday night I spent a little time catching pigeons down at the beach close to my house. They roost under the pier and I managed to grab five of them and was planning on using them this week for some simple drills with my pup. I just do the head under the wing technique and plant one at a time...

Re: The Garmin Alpha; An Expensive Mistake
I would love a firmware update that gives the 550 plus a tone option for when on point. The vibrate isn’t going to help If the handheld isn’t being held or resting on your body.

Re: Rattle snakes and a pup
I’m also in Southern California, we run in to rattlers all the time. Bird dogs are bred to find things, if they are not snake broke it’s just a matter of time before they get bit. My sister’s dog got bit in the face two years ago in my parents avocado grove, not fun. I don’t allow my pups to free r...

Rattle snakes and a pup
I am in Southwest Idaho and have run into similar issues. I did rattlesnake avoidance - which helped - but to your point the snake has to be rattling before it cues the dogs trained avoidance. I had the exact same thing happen with my dog - my dog ran within 3 feet of a juvenile rattlesnake 2 times...

Rattle snakes and a pup
I’m in Southern California and the snakes are coming out. Up until about a month ago I was hiking my 9 month old GSP almost always off leash in the mountains about 4 x a week. We have been bumping into snakes and I’ve started putting her on the leash to avoid getting bit. I’m going to do the snake a...

Re: New to e-collars and bird dogs
I was thinking about doing some hiking with the collar on and not do any corrections with it. Just so she doesn’t associate it with staying close to me in heel or whoaing.

Re: New to e-collars and bird dogs
Learn how to use the collar properly and you will not have any issues. Most people start around six months. There are some excellent training DVDs on introduction. George Hickox or Perfection Kennels work good. Just don't over do it. Use the collar to enforce Commands that she Knows. Just understan...

New to e-collars and bird dogs
I know everyone says wait till a dog is about one year old for heavy training. What exactly is heavy training? Can my 9 month old female gsp take e-collar corrections with out ill effect? I’ve been doing basic obedience with her: Sit, heel, here, and whoa. Those are the only commands really. And dro...

Re: male or female puppy
Question. I talked to the breeder I got my GSP from the other day and he said that my girl should go in heat from age 6-8 months. His advice was to wait till after first heat to spay, to allow for more development. I have no problem waiting after the first heat to spay her. But if it significantly i...

Re: male or female puppy
So as long as spayed before 2 yrs old you reduce chances of mammary cancer?
Does it make a difference if done before or after first heat cycle?
