Re: Setters Perspective

I hit send before I meant to. When we take Nick places, yes he travels all over with us, I am very surprised how many people have no idea what breed of dog he is. He has been called a long haired Dalmatian, a cross between something and a blue tick hound and various types of spaniels. To someone who...

Re: Pigeons cohabiting with game birds, same pen

Just my .02 but unless you are very careful and very certain about where your pigeons come from youre asking for potential trouble. Pigeons are well known for carrying diseases and could easily spread things to the game birds. If youre gonna shoot whatever you put out not a biggie but if you liberat...

Hot weather training

Curious for ideas on what kind of pointing dog training other folks do in the summertime when its oppressivly hot and humid? Im in Alabama so dont try to tell me about "dry heat" somewhere. I dont really have many options to go north but if i could find birds on public land somewhere north i might m...

Re: Woodcock help PLEASE

Ok here is a pic of what I’m referring to. Growing up I heard old hunters call them “jack snipe” but then I got older and was taken “snipe” hunting and to be honest I’ve been a little confused ever since. If you’ve ever been taken “snipe huntin” you know what I mean. [IMG]https://uploads.tapatalk-cd...

Re: Woodcock help PLEASE

I’m wondering if these are the same birds we’ve seen around here usually late in the season Jan feb but not in thick areas but rather in cut soybean fields that are wet usually have frozen and thawed a few times. Brown colored bird with a long beak over an inch long. When they flush they make a scre...

Re: Nick’s first field trial

I just noticed the auto “bleep” in Nicks bloodline. Funny. Well, considered short for Richard and like Nick but with a D. Most English Setter people will know.

Nick’s first field trial

I couldn’t find my earlier post about Nicks first field trial so I’m just starting a new one. Nick now 6 mo old English Setter out of Tricky "bleep" and Shadow Oak bloodlines, ran in his first puppy stakes trial yesterday. The NBHA folks at Walnut Grove, AL were wonderful and very patient with us as...

Re: New Beginnings

Great to hear. I went through some bad health issues as well. Multiple back surgeries staph infection in my spine, blood clots etc. I promised that if I got back on my feet I was getting a puppy. Mine is 6 months now and he gets me out many days when I’d otherwise just lay down. Like yours he is a t...

Re: Hunting "out front" looping?

I plan on trying to both do walking field trials and hunt. Sadly if it was just hunting I’d need to do something else. I’m trying hard to reestablish quail habitat and join others in doing so but wild quail bird populations in our area are sad. If I’m going to get to enjoy watching a bird dog work t...

Re: Won't hunt

One thing I’ve noticed that helps a young dog is letting them run in a pretty open field where the grass or cover is short. Like after a hay field has been cut etc. helps if there are some grass birds around. The open area and the short cover will help with confidence to venture out. Also take wife ...

Re: Hunting "out front" looping?

I plan on running him in walking type field Trials. No horseback or atv. He is hunting hard and does seem to have pretty good natural instincts about “birdy” type places. He’s young and I don’t want to harp on him much as long as he is hunting hard but at the same time I don’t want to let it develop...

Hunting "out front" looping?

I understand wanting a dog to hunt "out front" and for the most part my 6 mo old setter does stay out front. Especially if I pay attention and start out into the wind. The issue that Im noticing is that he wants to get out to a out 100 to 150 yds or so depending on cover then he wants to loop back t...

Re: Tips or advice first nbha puppy trial

Thanks for the info. I was also concerned about catching pen raised birds. My understanding is that nbha does not put out birds for puppy stakes. Its based on how well the dog gets out front and hunts etc. At this point I wouldnt run him if they were putting out pen raised birds. Ive been running hi...

Re: Tips or advice first nbha puppy trial

Thanks for the info. I have talked with the local contact and also went over the rules etc. Will definitely get there early and hope to get a later draw. The contact told me they had 7 or 8 other puppies signed up. I know mine will be on the younger end but he had been abke to get out and run since ...

A couple of new pics

He loves water. We made a round near the river and he decided to play lab and was dragging in driftwood. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190330/5395d1ede521d42f109878dbe7277b8c.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190330/4b49580c88b7cbeffe22c65543fc3b84.jpg Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk

Where to take young dog to get into birds

I have a five month old English setter that is coming along great. I’ve been working him on pigeons and would love to take him somewhere to really get him into some birds. I live in north Alabama and have taken him to a couple of local wma and several places where I used to find birds. I’m intereste...
