Re: Birds in OK & KS
My farmer friends and I have never seen it this bad out here around Guymon. I drive 30 miles a day north of Guymon and have seen 2 pheasant the last 4 months. Normally, I would see several pheasant daily. I have not seen a quail in months. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a cottontail either.

Re: 114 degrees and high humidity
I glanced at the thermometer when I came in from doing some yard work with a dog and at 8:30 it was 100.3 degrees. I think I hear the mountains in New Mexico calling my name!

Re: 114 degrees and high humidity
I just got back from 10 days in Kansas City and man was I glad to leave that miserable heat and humidity. Growing up there I guess I didn't think too much about it. Now, it about kills me to go back there for very long. I'll definitely take 108+ degrees dry heat over that miserable humidity.

Re: 114 degrees and high humidity
I have a sneaking suspicion that Kansas' bird population is going to suck this year in the southern half of the state. :( I've talked to two farmers and another guy that drives the country roads every day and the farmers each have seen one pheasant chick and my neighbor saw a group of 4 little ones...

I'll post of picture of him later. Just got back from hunting in this bitter cold. Tom, My Patches is a sister to him. Pa...

Looking for names of dog haulers
I'm just looking for names and phone numbers of dog haulers in the midwest or perhaps nationwide. I've been told that using dog haulers is a lot less complicated than flying pups or dogs. I've always sold my pups locally or within a reasonable driving distance but have a few people interested in my ...

Carded pigeons worked great for me but I am in wide open country. I have launchers and homers now but the carded pigeons are a cheap and effective alternative.

Great pics Tom! Nothing better than killing a rooster over a point, especially when conditions have been as tough as they are. I'm sure I'll be hunting Sunday after lunch so you and Dave hollar if you want to go. I have a basketball tournament on Saturday or we would go then.

Re: Where to hunt pheasants with snow cover?
To me, hunting in snow is the best time to hunt pheasants. Hunt the tall weeds or grass that is close to where they are feeding. You should be able to see all their tracks in the snow and see exactly where they have been hanging out.

Dog water de-icer
Just wondering what everybody uses to keep the dog's water from freezing up. I have always used a round bucket heater that lays on the bottom of the bucket, but it has quit working. It lasted a long time but was expensive to buy. I have heard of stacking two 5 gallon buckets and keeping a light bulb...

Best way to plant pheasants
Just wondering what method people use when they have to plant a sizeable number of pheasants for a group of hunters. I've heard of tucking the head beneath the wing and of dizzying them by swinging them. Just wondering if their are any other methods that work faster and/or better. Thanks!
Re: KANSAS
I agree Dave, not much better than that. Add in a couple inches of snow and a good huntin' buddy, and it doesn't get any better.

Re: Oklahoma Panhandle Quail
I know the pheasant crop is way down here in Guymon. Our hatch was very poor. The most little ones I saw with a hen all summer was two. There is a pretty good carry over from last years birds, but I'm expecting it to be below average. We've been spoiled the last few years with all of the birds.

Re: Oklahoma Panhandle Quail
A buddy and I hunted north of Guymon for a few hours on Sunday and saw two coveys of blues. The first covey we saw only had six birds in it so we let them go. The second covey we saw had about 25 birds in it and we took four. My dogs weren't able to cover the ground like we had hoped because of all ...

Keeping female from laying on pups
I was just wondering if anyone had any tricks in the design of their whelping box that would help keep a female from laying on her pups. I think I read a post awhile back about someone putting a rail around the inside of the box so I may have to try this. I came home from work today and found one de...

Chris,
If you haven't yet, go to the Dogs For Sale section and check out GSP Puppies by Chief_dog. If you don't mind the drive, you won't find a better deal. Even with the price of gas you would still be getting a great deal. Dave is a good guy and only has top notch shorthairs.

The Buddy Stick
I just read an article on the buddy stick, an 8 ft. piece of PVC with a brass snap on the end that can be used in whoa training and other areas of dog training. Just curious if anybody else uses a buddy stick in whoa training and how you like it compared to the whoa post, checkcord, or barrels. Here...
