Re: Which spaniel in your opinion has the best scenting ability?
I think you had better separate dashing Upland spaniels eg English Cocker, Springer, American Water etc. from the slower heavier spaniels such as Clumber and possibly Sussex that are more closely related to the Basset Hound. you would have to think that the latter would have better ground scenting a...

Re: In Ground Fencing and E Collars
I don't have much experience with electronic fences. I had a neighbor who used one. His dog minded it real well until it would see a squirrel/cat/racoon/critter. Prey drive and momentum would carry the dog past the electronic fence. The problem is that the dog had learned if he crossed that part of...

CJhills is on target regarding the need to back up and take your time. There is a phrase that goes dog training is like a zipper. If you get stuck, back up a little and start over. It's also a pretty good idea to do a lot of short exercises rather than one long. Since I presume your Standard Poodle ...

Most dogs metabolize food better if fed twice a day and there is also good evidence that it reduces the likelihood of bloat (gastric torsion) though not all breeds are prone to it. Of course, you have to balance that feeding schedule if you're going hunting early in the morning. I note no reference ...

You also couldn't be more wrong when you say I have limited knowledge of dogs. Perhaps in your opinion I do. Certainly, my life would be "diminished" without a dog. You need to take a look at the below link which addresses this precise issue at a retriever training board and-- in fairness-- take a look at how the law is written in a specific city you are visiting. Ray is undoubtedly giving you good advice, but here is an ad that was run on Gun Dog Central last year. If he has not been to the vet recently, get a sample of urine and have it looked at for a urinary tract infection. Pups can definitely get this, and you had best eliminate it as a possibility. I have done this before back in my breeding days; most breeders have had to take adult dogs back for various reasons not having to do with the dog. In other words, I suggest that you "actively" disregard the dog's interest in ducks, tweetie birds and such by walking away and urge the dog to "leave it" or some such command as you ignore and leave the scene.
