Re: Winter Training/Training in the Snow
Ratdog The best thing you could do for your dog and yourself right now, assuming it will a family bird dog, is to spend as much time as you can with her. Take her everywhere you can. Just hanging out and learning there are things she is not allowed to do. As much happy timing off leash as you can w...

Re: Winter Training/Training in the Snow
Training in the SNOW is basically, a waste of time. In the winter I do obedience, FF, etc; all things I can do indoors. I do road them in the snow. Working birds in the snow can cause more problems than it's worth. That seems to be the consensus. The trainer politely told me to knock it off. Patien...

For sure. Nothing wrong with Danner. I wore them when I was in the Corps and for work boots when I worked in the oil patch. I went to their factory when I lived in Portland. Fine American made product.

Yeah not too chilly, but we also get a much later start due to warm rattle snakey weather. God willing, one of these days I will get to put together some North to South full seasons! Place Command
My goal is to teach the dog when I say place and point she goes there and lays down until released. I’m mostly trying to use it to send her to her bed in the house when she’s being a pain. I’m trying to do it using the Wonder Lead. Cueing her to get up on the bed then manually putting her in the dow...

Re: Winter Training/Training in the Snow
I think your manners training sounds good. For a house dog, it'll pay off big time. Figure the hours spent as a companion over 13-14 years and it's so nice to have a mannerly unobnoxious dog. Enjoy the ride with your pup, it sounds like she's a nice one. Thanks shags! I want to be a little careful ...

Re: Winter Training/Training in the Snow
Thanks for the helpful responses. There is a lot of snow on the ground already, like 2’ maybe. The one time I did it I tied a section of hose to the birds’ feet. There were clumps of grass sticking up out of the snow so I stuck the bird in a clump and wrapped the cord around some grass. I tried to c...

Re: Winter Training/Training in the Snow
I always hesitated to train off leash in the winter. Where we trained there were ponds - half frozen now- and I always worried about my dog falling through the ice. If you have no ice, I see nothing wrong with training in the winter. I am trying to be pretty disciplined about keeping her on the che...

Does anyone do training in the winter? Specifically in the snow? Is there anything wrong with it? I have been figuring out catching pigeons with a net. I have the Irish Setter Wing shooters and they are ok but not great honestly. I'd be leery of that. It takes 2-4 weeks for a dog to settle in at a trainer's. Standard time is minimum 3 months. Just remember if you go to an orthodontist... They're gonna sell you braces. There’s a thousand ways to skin this cat. A puppy intro course is a pretty standard practice. Ronnie Smith ...

4 months is young to be sending to a trainer. She'll learn more hanging out around the house with you. Bird intro isn't time sensitive. If it has the genetics, it'll take to birds. You would get a lot more out of your money by waiting till the pup is older. I understand it’s a bit early. It’d be be...
