Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds
IDHunter There are dogs that in spite of how hard we try as breeders, just do not have a lot of point. Some dogs just like to chase. Dogs that chase car can't do much with one if they catch it. Some will spend there whole life trying. Usually they eventually get ran over. The problem with the "chas...

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds
Perhaps back to the check cord and steady the dog. It sounds like he has chased plenty of birds and bumped more than enough. You might try carded pigeons or chukar and get him pointing reliably and start taking the chase out. You may be on the way to having a great flusher and not much of a pointer...

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds
You have a great dog chasing birds at that age. I have seen other dogs that are not as near in prey drive what you have on that young dog. You have to understand that your dog is pretty young and sooner than later those chukar are going to teach your dog to be more careful when " the light comes on...

I think a financial investment in yourself would do you a ton of good at this point. Find a method that you like and use it. I would recommend Hunsmith or Perfection Series. Chukar hunting has been tough this year. I have been walking about 2 miles per covey. Got rained out today but looks good for tomorrow. I have the Pro 550+ and the Alpha 100 (recently aquired). The Pro 550+ is nicer to carry, and easier to use in the field for sure. I carry my phone with OnX, so the mapping on the alpha isn't really a selling point for me. The only thing I do really like from the Alpha so far is the dog stats. If th...

If the wind is from the cover and the dog hunts it when there's scent and doesn't when there isn't, there's really no reason for him to enter it. Re: Getting a dog to hunt more cover
Makes sense, of course. For the cover that I'm typically hunting for pheasants I feel like 10-60 yards would be about perfect, so i guess I'll just have to work harder on setting that boundary for the pup and see how long it takes him to catch on. Related to this, does anyone know if the Alpha 100 h...

Ah that's the worst. My dog did the same exact thing chasing a crippled quail in October. Looks like the injury was in "bleep" near the same spot as well. Seems I pheasant hunt as much or more then most here so...... I handle my dogs. A little handling that produces birds and the association between cover=birds is made. Getting a dog to hunt more cover
My 10 month old GWP has been doing something when hunting thicker cover that I'd like some opinions on. We routinely hit some WMA land where pheasants are released throughout the season, so there is a decent number of birds and a heck of a lot of old scent as dozens of birds are killed in these area...

I'd have no trouble believing it. If it were a small coyote and a big dog... I could see the dog handling it for sure. Seems extremely reasonable if it were a breed with high fur drive like some of the DD's.

Wolves have hurt the big game population in Idaho. When I lived in Montana, early 70's, Idaho tried to talk Montana into re-introducing the wolf. They got told no! Ryan's post is my thinking also. If you have a good supply of wild birds, forget the launcher. He might be easily intimidated by the launcher and it is easy to have a malfunction.
