You cannot put something into a dog without taking something out. If you believe that intellectually vacuous notion it's no surprise you believe the nonsensical stereotypical notions that keep trainers from working at a higher level. If YOU, personally, cannot figure out how to put something into a...

You take a retriever hunting. A pointing dog takes me hunting, there is a difference. I expect my finished dogs to go with me and include me in the hunt. I do not believe in micro managing a pointing dog. If they have been develop right they know more about where to look for birds than the hunter. J...

I can't add to the science that goes into dog food today. I think we worry to much JMHO though. I have been feeding a kennel full of bird dogs for 35 years. There is a pattern on this board. They need to buy a book and a tape and a book on tape. I'm sure these programs are fine and ...

Adapt to the conditions you are dealing with. If you can't give them enough wild bird contacts I would not hesitate about using planted birds or pigeons. I would do both wild bird and also pigeon work. By summer they will be ready to break, next fall you could finish and polish them on wild birds.

I have trained both ways, been at it a long time. I will stick with the ecollar. The ecollar helps more soft type dogs make it to a higher level of training imo. The ecollar is no shortcut to train a dog if it is used right. It is not a must have type of tool but man it sure is nice.

Bird in the launcher, remote I assume. Don't rub the bird down wind from the launcher. You are intentionally creating a hot spot to stop the dog on, you don't want to do that. Dog that learns to point a hot spot will, you want the dog to point a bird, do that! What you want is a dog that hit's scen...

Are we talking about running trials, or are we talking about training? Taking a dog hunting is not training. It is hunting. Allowing a dog to find birds in the wild is not training, it is experience. You do not train a dog to hunt, you allow it to. Training is teaching the dog how we wish it to beh...
