I realize owning a .22 in Trudeau's Canada brands you as an enemy of the state, but an air rifle is particularly suited for killing rats. Take a safety training course and you can apply for a PAL (possession and acquisition license). I always counselled new puppy buyers to ask their vet - they are the ones that are in tune with the incidence rate if things like Parvo in your area. Whatever harm you think may occur from not taking the dog out where other dogs are will be miniscule to the harm that would come from having a pup wit...

One of my favorite dog's of all time is the Labrador. This from a guy with DD's. I had horrible luck with them. Everyone does it different. Personally when I am taking a young pup out what I want from them is to learn how and where to hunt. Chasing is neither here nor there - it is a non event. Seems like normal puppy stuff with a dog with energy to burn.

There is no "too harsh" when dealing with biting. But reacting out of frustration or anger is real and something you want to avoid. She thinks this is a good game and whatever you are doing is considered part of the game to her.

Excellent post gonehuntin. Yes, houses should be "puppy proofed". Yes, we must be respectful of the fact that puppies will get into mischief. But none of that is obedience training or house dog training in any way, shape or form and I find it disingenuous to imply otherwise. The greatest disservice ...

By 4 mos old my puppies understand that "no" means "NO". They don't learn that with constant nagging. If you are repeating the command you are nagging. Yeah, I don't own a prong collar. I have a pinch but usually just use the choke. The tool is not so important as the technique which is the constant. I have also used the end of the leash twirling to help the dog with a cue to the forward boundary.

"Ready" would be a few days after you get him home. If you have lots of wild birds take him out for little walks where the birds are. The more birds the better doesn't mean only birds gunned over the dog.
