I realize owning a .22 in Trudeau's Canada brands you as an enemy of the state, but an air rifle is particularly suited for killing rats. Sit outside reading a book, and look up every once in a while to see if they have returned. And then... Any air rifle exceeding 500 fps is regarded the same as a...

Take a safety training course and you can apply for a PAL (possession and acquisition license). This allows you to buy firearms and ammo that are not on the restricted list (all handguns are restricted). When not in use all firearms must be locked and stored separately from the ammo. If you want a h...

I always counselled new puppy buyers to ask their vet - they are the ones that are in tune with the incidence rate if things like Parvo in your area. Whatever harm you think may occur from not taking the dog out where other dogs are will be miniscule to the harm that would come from having a pup wit...

One of my favorite dog's of all time is the Labrador. This from a guy with DD's. I had horrible luck with them. They are riddled with so many different health issues and for some reason, seem extraordinarily plagued by cancer. I lost three to it. One, Nipper was a Super Powder dog and died of eye c...

Everyone does it different. Personally when I am taking a young pup out what I want from them is to learn how and where to hunt. Chasing is neither here nor there - it is a non event. When a young dog has a full season under their belt and is showing me that they WANT to find birds and KNOW HOW to f...

Seems like normal puppy stuff with a dog with energy to burn.
There is no "too harsh" when dealing with biting. But reacting out of frustration or anger is real and something you want to avoid. She thinks this is a good game and whatever you are doing is considered part of the game to her.

Excellent post gonehuntin. Yes, houses should be "puppy proofed". Yes, we must be respectful of the fact that puppies will get into mischief. But none of that is obedience training or house dog training in any way, shape or form and I find it disingenuous to imply otherwise. The greatest disservice ...

Yeah, I don't own a prong collar. I have a pinch but ... A prong collar is a pinch collar. Same thing. The "pinch", by the way, refers to the fact that you squeeze the prongs together to put it on or remove links, not that it pinches the dog. When I first started in obedience many years ago, we cal...

By 4 mos old my puppies understand that "no" means "NO". They don't learn that with constant nagging. If you are repeating the command you are nagging. That being said - puppies are going to run around with things, chew on things and be a terror at times. What they need is some things that they are ...

Yeah, I don't own a prong collar. I have a pinch but usually just use the choke. The tool is not so important as the technique which is the constant. I have also used the end of the leash twirling to help the dog with a cue to the forward boundary.

"Ready" would be a few days after you get him home. If you have lots of wild birds take him out for little walks where the birds are. The more birds the better doesn't mean only birds gunned over the dog.

There are lots of hunting dogs who are asked to track down a crippled bird and pick them up without establishing point again, who still have zero problems pointing, many from NAVHDA. I prefer to train for it after a bird has been pointed, it has been watched go to wing and shots fired. Garrison The...

I have 4" blocks set between the outdoor kennel runs. The divider wall is 3 blocks high with wire above and they are 12 feet long.
