Re: How Is a German shorthair Pointer supposed to hunt?
At 10 weeks old you don't know the dog's natural range, cooperation level or prey drive.
First see what you have. Pups begin to stretch out around 5 months old. Expose him to the woods now, work on cooperation.

Re: Should birddogs be judged/titled based on conformation?
I agree with you, conformation to win field trials is different than that breed's standards and for the EP there is no standard. The Germans set the breed standard, I think in 1902 or there's about, for the DK. Form does follow function, the function for a versatile dog. All working breeds have the ...

Maybe the ones who are winning are structurally sound?
Maybe, lesser structure is over ridden by increased stamina/endurance/conditioning/food then mix in high prey drive and a dog can get through it?

No, with AFTCA philosophy- and I like so much- is the function makes the conformation. Winning dogs then have the word. What they suggest you is what is done in Germany first function after the conformation. I like how we are in AFTCA This, I believe, is taken out of context. It has been proven tha...

Re: Should birddogs be judged/titled based on conformation?
I've seen show champions with lesser conformation.I've seen to many trial dogs with faults that would be disqualifying and to many show dogs that couldn't find a hamburger tied to their nose.
Too many people mistake an AKC CH title to indicate perfection.

Was there full disclousure by the stud owner that there is EP in the line?
or are we still assuming the staws were exposed to radiation or mixed up during the proceedure or this being a throwback from 100+ years ago?
It takes 2 to tango, disclousure may have been helpful to the bitch owner.

Conformation has more to do with performance than it does with looking good.
Any breeder who overlooks conformation does not have the best interest of that breed in mind
and that includes teeth and bite.

Standards written to discourage black are done so to keep breeds from becoming to black
