I have been out 3 times so far in Northern wisconsin. Grouse numbers are up where i have been. Bagged 2 grouse yesterday, flushed 5 total, and also 4 woodcocks. I am north of park falls. Our snow is melting. This week is warming up everyday. Definitely not snowshoe depth yet at all. Birds are hit and miss for me this year. Somedays they are there, same spot next day, gone. But that is hunting.

I ended up going to my brothers cabin in Brainard MN, and hunting a pheasant farm around there. I have been there before and it is a great one. Might be the last time of the year.

Well, My buddies have backed out. The weather looks to be around zero for the entire trip. They both have poodles for hunting dogs, :roll: I have a GWP, need i say more . I am not going to make it out. Better for the population next year i guess. Luckily, I didn't buy a license yet.

Took the afternoon off yesterday and had a great 5 hours in the woods. Woodcocks were everywhere, shot our limit in about 2 hours, and also took 7 grouse by the time the day was over.

After a 5 day cold snap in northern wisconsin, it seems that in my spots anyway, that the woodcocks are gone. I am flushing very few of them, only 2 yesterday, none the day before. I can't believe that they all are migrated through, but maybe the locals are now gone from my areas.

Looks to be a rough weekend weather wise. We have had 30 mile/hour wind gusts all day yesterday and continuing today. Rain and snow tonight and tommorow.

Leave are full colored and falling fast, might all be gone by next weekend if the wind keeps up.

Made it out again for a couple hours last night. Saw more birds, and a few more woodcocks. Looks like the woodcock opener will be successful if i can shoot straight. Saw 6 different grouse, and about the same number of woodcocks.

made it out monday after work for the first time of the year. Had 4 flushes. Shot 1. Ran into a couple woodcocks too. It is still very dry, all my normal swamps are hard as a rock. Very green out too.

no, never in my opinion. I would not think twice of bring a puppy into woods/field and letting them go to town and have fun. Just try to keep from smiling as you watch them learn. Also I have tried to not handle my dogs in the field at all. Just let them figure it out, let the birds be the teacher.

do yourself a favor and don't load your gun until your dog points the grouse. you might find it hard to resist. Wish i would of did that with my first dog.
