The definitions of those terms depends on the country you hunt, trust in your dog and your need for control.

I've heard it said that those blood lines (GSP X EP) are consistent with the current make-up of the GSP's floating around now. So your dog is not that much different than everyone else's. Just repeating what I heard

I'm also heading out this weekend for the opener If Blue (Dusky) grouse are what you're after I like to stay high on the ridge tops. I'm surprised that any of the Pharoah Quail came back. As they aren't known to recall reliably. You don't say how old your pup is....So my answer /suggestion will be different depending on the age of your puppy. I would use pen raised quail on a really young pup to wake-up the bird desire or in a la...

As for timing of intro to birds, This is what I do. I have taken a freshly killing quail or pigeon and played/teased the puppies at 8 -10 week. As a breeder I give the pups an intro to birds before they go to their new homes and I see various reactions to a dead bird. Some puppies ignore it and othe...

Re: Age for bird intro and hunting
3 months = 12 weeks. If what you mean by "hunting" is shooting birds over the dog, then no, pups is too young. Intro to birds must happen first and intro to gun fire must also happen before you go hunting. But, if what you mean is to take a walk with pup in the woods (Without much under growth), wit...

I suggest one of the setter breeds: English, Red or Gordon. For Gordons check out Clearcut or Wyndancer there in MN. In my experience the black color helps them hunt colder temps when other dogs have given up.

I'm interested in the response, as this also has been happening with my birds. Most of mine haven't been lucky enough to live through it. English Cockers are an excellent choice for flushing duty, from pheasants to rabbits to grouse and woodcock. In my experience Springers can be too much dog for a lot of folks. IMO - Letting a dog find wing locked pigeons more than a couple times MIGHT lead to a dog that has to creep close to the bird before stopping. Once they get the idea that "birds are good" use launchers to keep your dog respecting birds or if possible work only on wild birds. At the age your pup is b...

I've also had bad luck when expecting puppies. When you know what you want and are willing to wait for it the situation you are in is not uncommon.
As breeder of Gordons ...it's all a crap shoot because there are soooo mannnny variables.

Your pup doesn't know the command "Whoa" yet. Take your dog off birds. As allowing to break and chase during the whoa training process sends mixed messages. Gordon Setters are very popular in the northern grouse woods for a reason. The black and tan coats soak up the sun and do well when it's cold. My dogs have done well when conditions stop other dogs. However, I would draw the line at asking them to break ice to fetch a duck.
