Pick the parents, and grand parents. With all else being equal (What can you really tell about a 7 week old puppy) go for the pup with the best eye appeal. No use hunting with an ugly dog...

I guess that's not entirely true. When pup is 2 or 3 months old (birds are really not yet the draw for pup) and I'm in the field with my pup I'll usually have a some treats in my pocket to re-enforce the behavior.

I agree that the field is no place for the clicker or treat training. I only use treats 100% of the time for the first couple training events and then I start to wean pup off the treats. Wean = a treat every other time and then ever third time, etc until the treats are not needed to get the behavior...

Depends on your dog...Try a bag and see if there is a difference. 2 of mine do much better on Earthborn Grain Free food and the other two would do well on bread and milk. For ease of feeding they all get grain free.

No problems here. There are wolves in the areas I hunt in western Idaho but I've had no encounters, nor have I heard stories of encounters from others. Every now and then a bow hunter will say they saw one, but that just adds to the "wildness" of the places we go.

Thanks for all the replies. I can also see that a pup taken hunting 6 times a year will certainly "mature" at a different rate than a pup worked several times a week. So many factors are at play here.

I use treats for yard work and behaviors in the house for these commands "Here", "Kennel and "Leave it". When pup knows the command in the yard I then wean them off treats and replace with a head rub when appropriate for field work. I also don't use a clicker, instead I say "Good Girl" or "Good Boy"...

It's more about the handling qualities and less about the gauge. I can get hit more birds with my 28 than I can with my 12, because the 28 fits better therefore I can shoot it better. It just happens to be a 28 gauge. If I can find a 12 with the feel of my 28 I would shoot that.

Yes. After a fire goes through there are little craters in the ground where the sage brush root system use to be. When I first saw it I was wondering what they were, but then I realized that the top of the sage brush root ball burned too.

I think you pretty much summed it up Gertie. Good dog work is defined by the owner, and manners are generally...generally ....dictated by what that definition is, a bird in the bag, personal preference or a ribbon on the wall. I would imagine it's the same there too.

Did she retrieve bumpers enthusiastically before? All dogs loose their puppy teeth, I can't remember the approximate age that it happens but I believe it's within the first year. And it appears that their desire to retrieve wanes during that period. Could it be that?
