If that dog will "Whoa" and stand indefinitely until released, I'd be willing to wager that it knows heel. I'd start with leash and regular collar and "pop" him on the neck while repeating the "heel" comand. If no luck, I'd move up the ladder of what others have suggested, starting with the least ag...

Re: How much does the handler do to have a good dog ?
There are two things which I think the pros add as part of their training that most casual hunters/trainers would never even notice. But to me they are the difference between a great/good dog and a dog which merely finds birds for its' owner. Number 1. Train the dog to take the required cues from th...

At 15 weeks, I am still trying to let the pup find out how much fun life is... Who wants a 7 month old pup ranging 800 yards anyway. You did good to sell it! Depends on what he is looking for in a dog. If that purchaser was looking for that kind of dog, he wouldn't be calling asking about it. Chalk up another one sold again as a 'started' dog. :) Then how did he do good to se...

100% agree with Highcotton. Most likely, none of the pups from the litter would have been what you are looking for. In the argument over style, I think way too much emphasis is placed on the wrong end of the dog. And I'm not talking about the tail, I'm talking further back say 30 to 1000 yards. Style to me is displayed more by the way the dog goes about getting things done than by the way it looks on point or how...

I'm new to trials too but here's how I view it. The judge has a long list of things he is looking at in a dog. Your job as a handler is to show, favorably, as many of them as possible to the judge. The judge doesn't care about you as a handler at all (as far as his judging goes that is)--- he wants ...
