Wanted some input/ideas on alternative bedding for barrels. I have always used straw in the past but with the new kennel and drainage trough, the straw that is consequently pulled out with dogs going in and out finds its way in the trough causing a little extra work. I was hoping there was something...

The the collar I would say is just a shy smaller of normal size. I have a 36 lb. setter with a pencil neck and it fits him fine I just have to buckledown just about all the way up and then tuck whats hanging out on the collar back through the D ring, works fine.

I know that when it is time to get the dog out of its kennel or get it out to run, you can try riding your horse up to the kennel a few times until that dog wants out so bad that he doesn't care if your riding a dragon or a goose, he will want to get out and run.

I would say there are alot more pointers bred and trained for foot hunting as opposed to horseback dogs. It takes a real special dog to compete in horseback stakes and only a select few see the day.

This is some good stuff. I have been waiting for a good discussion like this for a while.
Ok, here is a scenario, if I have trained a couple dogs(foot hunting) for some money before I started trialing, and I run only my own and self-trained dogs in those trials, am I considered a Am or a Pro?

In my travels I have found that smaller lighter, rougher dogs handle well in the thick briar, mountains where I live. I breed for a small setter with tons of drive and like to breed dogs that don't mind to run face first into briars. My largest setter weighs in between 40 and 45 pounds.
