Re: wondering if anyone wanted to get together and train some
well, I should have guessed that a few of our training friends would chime in here....Bill, you know that I love having you and your gang here, and as much as I would love to train in your neck of the woods, CA is just a little too far. But maybe if Kevin wants to hire a bus we could work it out. Oh...

Re: wondering if anyone wanted to get together and train some
just noticed your post....I live in Larned, not too far from you. Most evenings there are several people that come out to train, as well as planned weekends. I have plenty of wild birds and lots of land to run on. You would be welcome to come out here, and we may be interested in heading out your wa...

Re: Teaching my spaniel to "whistle sit"?
I think 'gonehuntin' ' had some good advice for ya. Personally I wouldn't use the method that you are presently using. When I train flushing breeds to sit, I use the whoa post, as taught by Rick and Ronnie Smith. However I am teaching sit instead of whoa (stand). The difference is in the placement o...

We escaped a near disaster the other week... one of the guys that trains with me bought a new TWH. Along with the misc. tack that came with the horse was a pair of 3 legged hobbles, so I assumed that the horse was used to them (WRONG !). To say it did't go well would be an understatement !!! Thank g...

As stated above, a working firearm is not allowed in any trials unless a bird is killed in the event. However, I think your question is ' will a blank load work in a semi auto ? The answer is yes, if you load the round into the chamber yourself, BUT no if you want it to load from the clip.

Re: Ticks
I use Bronco spray on all the horses, seems to work. I also use the Bronco on the dogs before they go to the field. There are several products like Frontline for horses that I intend to look into. I even tried leg bands, you know kinda like a flea and tick collar, but the horses lost them in the pas...

I surely would like to see horses that "enjoys" fireworks and cannon fire ! But that's a little extreem for my needs. And I did intend to introduce the gun gradually. With our dogs, we often introduce gun fire using birds and prey drive as the diversion . Horses don't have prey drive, but do h...

the pic doesn't show the cap right, it is 3/8 in steel, I've been pounding on it and also use the cap to pull the stake out. So far, it seems strong enough,....guess time will tell

A Better Stake-out ?
I posted a question about stake-outs a while back. I searched the net and looked at what friends used, but I have yet to see something that I really liked ,....so now I've made one. I think it will be safe, easy to pound in and pull out, and won't bind or get the rope tangled. I was wondering if oth...

Thanks for your replies. I have used both halters and collars. I too have name tags on the collar. Right now I think I'm more concerned about the stake itself. First, let me say congrads on getting the pup. It's great fun to run your dog in hunts test and /or trials, do it and have fun! But I'm frankly surprised that the "foster mom" who judges, would only have shown a 5 mo old pup birds one time. I'm very lucky in that my training grounds have tons of wil...

Right now we just push him away and tell him no but he continues to try and get closer and closer no matter what we do. That will make the problem worse. Instead of pushing him away and validating his fear that you don't want him, give him a big hug and bring the other dog closer for a group hug. T...

I have a 28 ga Citori that I adore, but might have to sell....I can't find any info what price to place on it. Any ideas ? I guess it's a field grade as it has no markings, it's 26" barrel w/fixed chokes, in great condition.

when training , I do not shoot every bird that the dogs point. I guess that I shoot every 4th or so pointed bird. no one would shoot any dog that I've trained to be a bird dog. It's called trash breaking, (no disrespect to deer hunters), if it ain't a bird, the dogs doesn't press it. I don't want a bird dog to run deer, coons, rabbits or anything that doesn't have feathers.

Re: how to get dog's head up when on scent?
What breed is the dog you're speaking of ? Some breeds will hunt with a low head, ie., tracking breeds. If you are talking about a pointing breed, I think the only cure would lots and lots of wild bird contacts. A dog that hunts with a low head will bump more birds. It is very possible that the dog ...

if it is cherry eye, the vet can stitch the eye lid back in place, which is your best bet. As I'm sure the good dog dr will tell you, if you remove the eye lid, your dog may develop problems with dry eye.

Re: Teaching a dog to work closer?
You don't teach a dog to work closer by free running him. You can teach the dog to work at a closer range by planting birds closer together, working on quartering drills while on a check cord and teaching a dog to "go with you" on the check cord and or command lead. I NEVER would have a knot in a ch...
