Re: What's your favorite bird dog training program?

This will probably sound like a blast from the ancient past but I've always told customers that the best pre-training study is to read Robert Wehle's book "Wing and Shot."

Beautiful dog. Nice photo but you should photoshop the check chord out of it and claim he's broke. (LOL)

Re: Bird Introduction Gone Wrong?

First let me say that I have generally worked with pointing dogs but have some experience with cockers and springers. He's not shy of game after the first go round so I wouldn't be overly concerned with his "puppy" behaviour with the first one. Prey drive is extremely important with any breed but ge...

Re: Books or literature for spouses

In terms of training a bird dog the best ever written is "Wing and Shot ' by Robert Wehle.
As far as the spousal issue the most important is don't teach sit. Use whoa instead. "Stand up and stand still."
Just my humble opinion.

Re: Is playing tug with a puppy a bad idea?

When you get the pup back to you (with the check chord) take the dummy in your hand and push it further into his mouth. This will cause him to open his mouth. Take the dummy quickly and then make the big "Good Doggy" fuss over him.

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds

IDHunter There are dogs that in spite of how hard we try as breeders, just do not have a lot of point. Some dogs just like to chase. Dogs that chase car can't do much with one if they catch it. Some will spend there whole life trying. Usually they eventually get ran over. The problem with the "chas...

I wrote this in memory of all the good bird dogs I've owned, bred, and judged over the last 55 years. The error I've seen most often is continuing to move hurriedly to the front when the course takes you into or near a cut and continuing to move puts the dogs behind you.

Re: Back2theBook - another new member looking for help

One more thought. When ever I sell a pup to a "newbe" I always suggest they get a copy of Wing and Shot by Robert Wehle the founder of Elhew Kennels. It was written in the pre e-collar days and takes you from whelping box to finished dog. It's old but it's good. (Just like quite a few of the contrib...
