Random lameness in GSP

Hello everyone - I wanted to see anyone could share some advice on my gsp who's had on and off limping for the past 2 months or so. He's 1.5 yrs old and there is no genetic issues from his bloodline related to any sort of join issues. At first it was only a slight limp and I noticed it after he was ...

Re: Itching - Food Allergy?

I am actually in the same position with my 1.5 yr old GSP. Been feeding him PPP 30/20 chicken and rice. We have him on allergy medicine now and the vet said to stop once we get to mid summer to see if it's environment related. Hard to tell since symptoms are almost identical (licking paws, shaking h...

Re: GSP not so good with strangers

It sounds as though you just need to get a "handle" on him, and to teach them some real obedience work. Try contacting your local obedience club (or school), where the instructors have genuine AKC titles put on dogs as credentials (CDX, UD, UDX or similar). Putting some real work into him every day ...

GSP not so good with strangers

Hi everyone, Some of you on here have probably read several posts where I ask very novice questions due to lack of experience with a GSP. Here is another! My GSP (Maverick) is now just over 1 yr old. He's a great dog, obedient most of the time when he decides not to be stubborn and a blast to ...

Re: Transition to adult food

Your pup is exactly where he needs to be for his age. Over the next year his metabolism will slow down and you will need to cut back the calories as he fills in a bit more, with hopefully more lean muscle mass and zero fat. Garrison Appreciate the response Garrison. Good to know he's right around w...

Re: Transition to adult food

Feed the 30/20. Lamb is a poor substitute for chicken meal in the food for an active dog. Thanks for the info. Just debating the salmon vs chicken then. I like the idea of more calories to help him fill out but don’t know if it’s worth the price gap. IMO definitely not worth it Sent from my iPhone ...

Transition to adult food

Hi everyone, Had a question that I thought I knew the answer to, but wanted to ask people that are familiar with the GSP breed. My pup is now a year old and has been on Purina pro plan puppy since I got him. He’s roughly 50-52 lbs and I’m curious if I should have switched to adult food sooner. He se...

Re: Gsp vet anxiety

Change vets. Some vets have the magic touch and they have patience and a lot of interest in the dogs. Find a vet like that and she will work your dog through it. I find that sort of vet most often in the older vets, approaching retirement age. They were trained differently than the vets who are com...

Gsp vet anxiety

I have a gsp puppy whose 10 months old currently. I took him to the vet and am somewhat bothered by several things the doctor said. For one she basically had the attitude that it was completely unusual that I had a timid gsp. For reference I got him during the time where we could not go in the vet w...

Re: Over correcting and fear in gsp puppy

I appreciate the help. As far as any other training goes, I really just focus on the basic sit, down and stay (have been using wait as the command) and he's got them down well. I can have him sit and wait for a good bit whether it's for food, going outside or waiting to go for a toy on the ground an...

Re: Over correcting and fear in gsp puppy

Thank you guys. This puppy is teaching me just as much as I am it. I appreciate the advice, and it'll be easier moving forward knowing where I made the mistake. I did some tug with him when he initially showed fear and that got him going again. He's probably much better than I give him credit for an...

Over correcting and fear in gsp puppy

Hi everyone, I have not posted here on a while, but my gsp pup is now 13 weeks and doing great! His obedience training has gone well and he is getting better at listening to a firm "NO" for behaviors he should not be doing. Now to the issue, and this is more on me the owner than him at all. I am emb...

Hi All, I have had my pup, Maverick for about a week now, and he is progressing well! He started sleeping through the night in his crate after only 2 nights! Mike - Awesome looking little guy. I hope he is everything you hoped for and if he is, I'll bet you get out with him more than a few times a year. FWIW, some folks change feeds in the summer to a less potent formula. NONE of the pro trainers I know(and I know several), do that. They just feed less....

Thank you both again. I myself am big into nutrition so naturally I was going to be anal about what I give my dog. Just don't fall into the trap of equating dog nutrition and people nutrition. I don't usually jump in on "feed this, not that" conversations usually what ever works is fine, but I would think twice about TOTW. It's a grain free feed, which means it uses peas, potatoes, and other legumes. Did you know that those together with a lack of the usual by products in dog food have b...

Mike - As far as exercising my dogs hard, I prefer they do that on an empty stomach. With a GSP there is always the issue of stomach torsion to consider. They seem to be more prone to it than pointers, especially as they get older. I tend to give my dogs an opportunity to empty out prior to asking t...

Gotcha. So you basically free feed until about 3 months. I naturally do maybe TOO much research and saw alot about bloat and when to feed vs exercise so it made me nervous about a certain routine. Mike - Welcome. A GSP is a good choice of bird dogs and should do everything you will need in the uplands. Read a few training books and if you want to know how to hunt...just follow the dog. they are the experts anyhow. If you do send your dog to a trainer, try to get some time in with the trainer...
