Re: Is this Behaviour called being Gun Shy?

answer to cjhillis: Thank You. He is 6 years old and always would run to pick up the landed dummy and sit by it instead of bringing it to me. She joined him 2 years ago when she was a pup. They have the described behaviour whether together or alone. I use Power Level 4. The highest level, 5, I occas...

Is this Behaviour called being Gun Shy?

When I prepare my 22 caliper launcher to propel a dummy 300 feet away, both my Short Hairs position themselves to chase the flying dummy. They seek out the landed dummy and pick it up. Then they lay the dummy on the ground near where it landed and sit by the dummy. They do not retrieve the dummy bac...

Re: Swollen Lip

My GSP is OK now.

He'd been taking antibiotics; and the mass slower shrank. After 5 days a thorn came out; and the mass disappeared in 3 days. The vet says no need for surgery to search for the source my dog's problem.

Swollen Lip

Has anyone had their gundog get a swollen lip? My 3 ½ year old GSP suddenly developed a very swollen lower lip the day after we spent the day in the field. I found a very tiny thorn and removed it. The next day his lip is still swollen. The vet says he might have part of the thorn deep inside his li...

Re: Working tug/obedience with toys

I use toys to exercise and train my GSP; nevertheless, he gives preference for hunting birds, his instinct. To exercise him physically and mentally indoors we do tug-of-war, searching for a specific named toy via “find ball”, retrieving a thrown toy, and his playing catch-me. The “drop” command make...

Re: GSP separation anxiety

I believe you can train Calie to be at home alone without anxiety. My 3 ½ year old GSP does not have separation anxiety when I leave him alone in the house for 2 hours. In fact, when I put on my going-to-church clothes he automatically goes into his crate (without my saying anything) and I lock him ...

Re: GSP Water Introduction

I introduced by GSP pup to water immediately; namely in his 3rd month in the winter time. I would take his on leash to fields with small frog ponds and let him decide what to do. It turns out he loves ice so he would pound on the pond to break off a piece of ice to eat. A few months later we visited...

Re: Trash breaking - chickens - Ruin bird dog?

My GSP was extremely interested in my chickens for about a month but hardly pays any attention now. They are in a coop (otherwise fox and hawks get them). He completely ignores the chickens. He is highly interested in my Quail who are also caged. I have to say “forget-it” with the Quail. However in ...

Re: GSP puppy owner

My GSP pup also would chew on bumpers. I wanted him to retrieve the bumper but there was something about its textile and size that would make him just chew on it – whether outside or indoors. So, for retrieving I switched to tennis balls. Sometimes he’d chew them but not often. He would also chew pl...

GSP only Partially Retrieves Launched Dummy

My 3-yr old GSP does not bring the dummy to my feet; instead, he gets the launched dummy out of the brush into an opening, drops it, and sits. Furthermore, he will not “come” even if I leave the launcher somewhere and stand a few feet from him. He waits for me to pick up the dummy. (Launcher is DT S...

Re: new member Mike

I never had a dog until I retired and got a 2-month-old GSP. At the time I did not know if I would have any success; all I knew was that I had always wanted to have a GSP companion. During the first year he learned rapidly to be a calm indoor dog. Outdoors was difficult because he was easily distrac...

New Member with Very First Dog

After 3 years reading Gundog Forum, I requested membership. My reading began when I acquired a 2-month-old GSP pup at a time when I had never had a pet larger than a guinea pig. I had a lot to learn. The Forum’s discussions and opinions helped me care and train my Gundog. My grandfather and his brot...

Re: Walking Bird Dog on Lead

To reduce his pulling frequency I trained my 2 year old GSP that the word "nopull" means I have a treat for him. I too am aggravated when he pulls. Now when his leash rises off the ground I say "nopull" and he stops and comes back to me for his treat. After his treat he slows down or forgets to pull...
