Training Question #1
Hey guys, I'm training my first bird dog and have loads of questions... Introduction first. I got my Irish Setter (or Red, whatever y'all call AF dogs) puppy in July at 10-1/2 weeks old. Never have I hunted birds before. I've hunted blacktail deer on and off starting 7 or 8 years ago . Haven't gone ...

Re: Dog training books
That Lindley guy's style sounds appealing. Just from skimming the PDF "book" it looks like he has a positive type training approach. I dislike aversive training methods.

Re: Swamp poodle puppy, LBD, Boykin
Not laughing at the guy who gave me the advice... He is experienced, and like everyone, has his preference and knows what works for him. The comparison, however, was unique! I guess I'll find out for myself if Wolters method works.

Re: Swamp poodle puppy, LBD, Boykin
I like your puppy! I just saw that you guys were talking about Richard Wolters' book. I have yet to train my first gundog but I'm planning to get his book. I had one person recommend his book to me, and then the next guy basically told me Wolters' book is equal to Dora the Explorer. Haha, stil...

by shags » Sun Aug 08, 2021 4:03 am My choice would be to get the dog spayed. You planned on doing it anyway, this incident just pushes the date up. Then spay the setter and avoid another mess. Actually my Red Setter isn't getting spayed at this point. She's an awesome little puppy, though. All leg...

Re: Breeding Accident
Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. That last article was very informative and talked about things I wasn't previously attuned to. Yes, I need to get locks on my kennel! I'm in the School of Hard Knocks, but I think I'm not the only one. I've been learning things by trial and error. Sometimes no...

Re: Breeding Accident
Too bad that happened , but you aren't the first one to have that happen. I can only suggest you talk to your vet about safe abortion methods. My vet should be happy to answer any questions I may have; I've spent $2,600+ at his clinic this year just on this dog. Kinda funny though. I give hi...

Re: Breeding Accident
Thanks for the advice. Have any of y'all had a litter from a father/daughter or mother/son breeding? Some dog breeders intentionally breed that way. What do you think the chances are that things would be okay if I just let this play out (and then find homes for the pups if there are any)? Of course ...

Breeding Accident
Hello everyone! I'm a new member of GDF and a relatively new dog owner. I'm still learning a lot of things. I grew up with dogs and livestock a big part of my life, but hadn't had my own dog until December 2020. The adoption of my first puppy, Rainey, was not a planned adoption... It was a head-over...
