It was a good day
I just got the call! Blazer Boy won the Southern New England Brittany Club's horseback open gun dog stake today! There were 31 starters so he now has the required major at a Brittany club and 5 points toward his FC (half way there!!). We've had some setbacks along the way, but everything seemed to f...

If you're talking first aid, I keep a well stocked first aid kit in my truck, and if going afield, I carry a small first aid kit with me and some EMT Gel. This is the small kit I carry: http://www.lcsupply.com/Product/Medicine-Shelf/Gun-Dog-First-Aid-Kit.html For vaccines, I do get mine the Lyme vac...

You may want to get some Adams Flea & Tick spray. Frontline works well, but is suppose to take 24-48 hours to kill ticks. The Adams will repel fleas and ticks (and mosquitos too I believe), and the Frontline will be a 2nd line of defense. If you transport in a crate with bedding, I'd spray the beddi...

I have Radio Fence IF and it has to be closed loop. The first time I installed it, I only did my front yard, so I put the wire in 2 trenches about 6 inches apart. Then I reinstalled, threading it through my chain link in the backyard 5 feet high. It keeps the dogs 3 feet from the fence line, so no d...

I have "traveling lawn furniture" :D :D As I see a path being beaten down, I move a nice little cluster of lawn chairs or a park bench in the way, which changes the traffic pattern. I do this weekly as I'm mowing the lawn, sometimes throwing down some extra seed as I go, and I've managed to maintain...

Both North Jersey's trial and DelVal's trial will have a wrangler. Gary, I should be at both so I can introduce you around. I don't know that I'll be riding again by then, but I can hook you up with some people to ride some braces with. The club sells breakfast and lunch in the clubhouse, and then h...

When Karen indicated that she felt that many DC just are not as good as a specially bred dog I think it points out exactly what we are saying. Way too many people have lost their way and forget the Brit or the GSP are all around dogs and the best of the best are the ones that do everything well and...

I thought this was an interesting quote from the 1907 Field Trial Article written by Chas. B. Cooke (link from yesterday http://gundogforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10207) "Retrieving is not a part of the training of a field trial dog; this may seem strange to the uniniated, but it is a big item in...

I for one have never had a brittany FF and never will. If they won't retreive they are sent down the road to someone that will weekend hunt them or family pets. I am just now geeting into trialing alittle more here and there but will only ever run retrieving stakes if I do. All my dogs in the few l...

Thanks Karen, I know this is probably a sensitive subject, but that's basically what I was looking for (and what I guessed was the case). Another question that shows my ignorance on the Brit trial scene. You mentioned "finish their FC title". What exactly is involed with getting a FC? In the pointe...

This is just my opinion on Brittany dual champions. You have a few different kinds in the Brittany world: 1. Field dogs that are put with the right show handler and shown in the right shows to the right judges that finish their show ch. titles 2. Show dogs that are trained by the right trainers, han...

I'm just saying that with some dogs it's a trade-off and you should tread lightly. If you're going to use the prong collar for obedience training, you absolutely should get your girl out and let her stretch her legs in the field while you're attending the class, and if you get the slightest inkling ...

I'd find a different class, to be honest. Using heavy handed training tactics (spike collars fit into this category) can take the independence right out of a dog. They may work for tougher dogs like dobies and rots, but I would never use one on a hunting dog that you expect some amount of independen...

Your older dog will establish pack rules with little to no involvement from you. If he's well socialized, it shouldn't be a big deal, and as long as no one is getting hurt, you need to let it happen. No, don't crate them together (next to each other is fine, but I wouldn't ever put 2 dogs in a crate...

Arlette, my pro costs me $325/month per dog. I went to the Rick Smith seminar a couple years ago that Lion Country Supply sponsored. I drove more than 4 hours each way, and stayed in a hotel 2 nights and took a day off work to get there for the Friday evening session. That to me is nearly 2 months w...

Unfortunately the seminars are usually pretty pricey, and add travel and hotel expenses to that, and I can pay for 2 months of full-time training for my dog for what a 2 1/2 day Rick Smith beginner seminar costs (with expenses) and when you use a local trainer, you can be part of the training also (...
