Try using a squirt bottle full of water for the barking. Don't need to even say anything, just hit him with a stream of water when he starts barking....works like a charm.

Re: K9 Advantix???
Agree with everything said by both Ayres and Submariner. Advantix works great on ticks, fleas, and mosquitos if you don't have cats around the house, but it stays greasy a lot longer than others. That being said, its our choice. We also use a monthly heartworm preventative as extra insurance.

Re: Bulking Up for Winter
I agree with what everyone else has said so far. I can't think of any reason to put extra weight on what sounds like a healthy, athletic pup. The neoprene should help with the duck hunting weather. As for her weight, I wouldn't stress over it. She sounds fine.

That little P-38 is very cool. Tex-X, got plenty of pics of Rhinos here too...mostly from the exact opposite end of the spectrum as yours. Re: Spring Turkey!
There are apparently plenty of turkeys in Virginia, just none around the VA Beach area. I'd gladly travel further west to hunt them, but public land turkey hunting scares me to death and more importantly, my work doesn't permit me much travel time these days.

Good luck! That's a nice group of toms. Since moving to VA from the South, it looks like I'll miss my first "other bird" season in quite a few years as they're virtually nonexistant here in the tidewater. Shoot one for me!

I feed Diamond Performance. Fed the premium for just shy of a year but couldn't keep any weight on my dog. Now he eats 4 cups a day of the performance and does fine. Soft stools for about two weeks after switching, but no problems since then. And, its pretty affordable compared to some of the other ...

Re: Vizsla owners- Does your dog get beat up in the field?
As others have stated, the super-fine hair probably doesn't help. My boy comes out of the woods all scratched up and puffy eyed every time he goes hunting, but it doesn't seem to slow him down any. I don't use a chest protector on him, but i'd definitely try to make the one you use fit better. good ...

I get weim a lot, and the occasional redbone, and even Chessie every once in a while, but the most common one for me is Rhodesian ridgeback. I always end up saying Vizsla and explaining that he's a "bird dog", but around here even that doesn't seem to help.

Yes, you can give a dog benadryl. We normally use 1/2 tablet per dose. Be careful is your dog is on any other medications of course, but it should be safe. good luck

Only 4 hours of work a day? Must be nice to be in the Air Force!! :D I agree with everyone here on crating the dog when you're at work while he's young at least. When my dog was younger and more destructive, he spent short days up to 4 hours or so in a crate and longer days in a big bathroom closed ...

1st hunt of the season
Thought I'd share some pics we took on Monday of Frank's first hunt of his second season. Unfortunately I haven't been able to work with him as much as I'd like due to my work schedule, so he was pretty rusty early (for some reason the Navy thinks it has precedence over dog training!). After busting...

Had the same problem with my V one day last season. Took him to the vet and got a tube of eye specific anti-biotic that cleared the problem up virtually overnight. So, I'll second what a couple of others have said...can't hurt to run him by the vet's office.

Copper,
So maybe not as good a comparison as some guys on here can give you, but my vizsla was right around 30lbs at 5-6 months. He's now 53lbs around a year later. 27 doesn't seem outrageously small to me for an EP.

We have always given our dogs that are scared by fireworks half of a benadryl on July 4th and again on New Years Eve. We then put them in their crates with some tunes on as mentioned earlier. Always seems to cool the dogs out for the night, and no side effects that i've ever seen. Good luck

Vizsla shedding
My v has started shedding quite a bit lately and I'm wondering what the cause might be. I think I've narrowed it down to a couple of options: 1) I recently switched food (not going to go there!) but stayed within the same brand's product line. 2) Moved to VA and he goes swimming in the ocean probabl...

I've been using Promeris, which is pretty new to the market. It's waterproof and kills fleas/ticks just like the rest. It's got amitraz in it, so it also kills any demodex mites that might be around as well. So far, haven't found a single tick and only one dead flea on my dog since I started using i...

Hello everyone. Got a 5 month old Vizsla named Frank that I've been working with. Obediance wise he's pretty solid with sit, load up, here, and working on whoa a little bit.
