New Bloomfield MO - just 12 miles north of the Capital - Jefferson City. I visited the Black Gold home office in Vienna, MO and walked in and told them to co...

Darling puppy! Good luck with him. By the way, I LOVE your avatar picture! Thanks, The avatar picture is my dad and me and "Speck", the first bird dog I remember. Picture was probably taken in 1949 or 1950. I was fortunate to grow up with bird dogs, guns and a bird hunting dad. I have written about...

My dogs are doing great on Black Gold Plantation Blend. I'm happy and they're happy. $24/50 lb bag. If I was concerned enough about corn to feed Evo I would go to the sale barn and buy a cheap cow every so often and butcher her myself to feed them. You can certainly feed beef for the price of EVO. We had a record breaking cold snap here in Missouri followed by a warm spell and when I got in Sat Eve. I saw two ticks on one of my dogs. Since then I have been picking ticks every time I feed. I can't believe those suckers can survive the bitter cold, ice storms, snow storms etc. Old timers tell m...

Jake my old setter pointed two porkies in North Dakota. Needless to say in my haste to keep the pup out of range of the quill throwers I failed to keep Jake away and it turned out to be a $65.00 point. He wound up with a quill 1/4 in. from his jugular vein that had to be surgically removed. Wouldn't...

I visited a FL Plantation recently that uses 5 surrogators. They release 900 birds from each surrogator every 5-6 weeks continuously year round. They relocate the units after each release and they have supplemental feeders. I have never seen so many "wild" coveys of quail anywhere anytime! It was u...

My Friend and I are always bragging on our dogs. He's got GSP's and I've got Setters. He's got one GSP that I kept for two weeks while he and his wife were on a cruise. The pup was about 9 months old at the time so we bonded. I taught her how to jump up in the truck while he was gone and literally f...

Within the last year I had a friend ask where he could get a GSP pup. I put him in touch with a reputable breeder who had a great little male pup he could have bought for $400. He thought that was too much and wound up adopting a grown GSP from the pound. $1000 later in vet bills other assorted expe...

I do about 50/50.

I prefer being alone with my dogs. That way I can always go where I want to go and not have to always be watching the other guy.

I do hunt with others because I have a lot of friends that have access to private ground that I don't and I'm the one who can supply the bird dogs!!!

Duke, I've recently done some homework on quality feed as well. The Diamond Naturals seemed great to me untill I found that just about all of my local dealers had dropped them due to recalls, and new formula/ loose stool issues. Keep in mind, I am strictly going by what I was told when I tried to p...

A Benelli Ultra Light is what it is. A 6 lb. 12 ga. shotgun. I packed it for 10 days in North Dakota this fall and I never felt like it was kicking me too hard. I shot 1 1/8 oz of 6's with the first shot - high brass - and followed up with two in the magazine of 1 oz 4's. With a Modified Choke I was...
