I don't remember any new gun laws being passed in the last 4 years, did I miss something? you need some prolonged time at elevation to get the benefits of the altitude training. But I am sure that is much cooler up there and therefore you could run them for longer and get more conditioning that way.

Honestly, e tn and nc are not going to be not much better. That time of year i would say try a preserve of some kind. That is to late in the year for good grouse territory. Matt is right. There is not much bird hunting there. There are a couple of wma south of there that you might be able to get a quail or two. I do not know about woodcock season then, it might be in. I just throw the birds from behind the dog or have a partner throw them. Scenario: Dog is on cc 10-15 feet in front. Usually we will walk in some thin cover or right on the edge of some thicker cover. I will swing the dog away from the cover, have the partner throw the bird, so that it looks like it...

Not a lot of public land, best shot is to find a local land owner that may let you hunt and just run on those grounds.

I would agree that water is more important early in the season.
Had a chukar research biologist tell me that they can go up to a month with out water when the temps cool down. So, later in the season the water would be less of a need.
